5 years ago (2002): Mindy McIntyre drilled an RBI single to center field in the top of the first inning and all-state pitcher Ali Arnold took over from there, firing a three-hitter to preserve defending champion Normal Community's 1-0 victory over Palatine Fremd in the Class AA State Softball Tournament quarterfinals.

15 years ago (1992): Olympia High School football coach Ron Smith will coach the Bloomington American Legion Post 56 varsity baseball team this summer. Smith advanced to the Class AA level in the Milwaukee Brewers farm system and was Olympia's assistant baseball coach at for seven years before becoming football coach.

25 years ago (1982): Illinois State point guard Michael McKenny was selected to play in the National Sports Festival Four in Indianapolis in late July. McKenny, who just completed his freshman year at ISU, will be a member of the 12-man North team which will be coached by Norm Stewart of Missouri.

50 years ago (1957): Marty O'Connor, son of University High School's athletic director, hit safely in his team's final game to protect his lead in the race for the Intercity high school batting title with a .441 mark. Trinity's Steve Frost (5-1) had the best record among regular hurlers.
