2000: The intensity and quality of play were worthy of a title tilt as El Paso High School clawed out a 61-55 overtime victory against Lexington in a Midstate Conference showdown. El Paso forward Phil Uphoff had a big night with 24 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shots.

1990: Illinois Wesleyan snapped a four-game losing streak with an 82-80 basketball triumph over Washington University of St. Louis. A somewhat gimpy David Caldwell returned to the IWU lineup after an ankle injury. The senior center scored 11 of his team's first 18 points and finished with 20.

1980: Pepperdine basketball coach Jim Harrick called Illinois State the finest defensive team his club had faced this season-"better than (No. 5-ranked) Oregon State"-after ISU defeated the Waves, 84-72. No one typified the ISU defense more than McKay Smith, who with 1:46 to go, forced a 5-seconds call on the Waves.

1955: Ronald Thomas won't be present when the Wesleyan Titans entrain today for Waukesha, Wis., because of the untimely death of his mother and brother in an auto crash at Chenoa. In fact, it is not settled whether the Fairbury boy will be back in school as yet. He is by far the class of the freshman talent.
