2001: El Paso High School's Jennifer Cox scored 12 second-half points from 3-point range to provide the spark and Ashley Morgan sank two free throws in the final seconds to put the finishing touch on a 45-44 girls basketball win over Eureka in the Olympia Class A Regional at Stanford.
1991: Steve Czirjak exploded for a career-high 26 points, including an amazing 19 straight in the first half, as Illinois Wesleyan dismantled North Central, 103-68. Junior forward Todd Kurz paced Central Catholic with 21 points in an 86-64 victory over LeRoy.
1981: Greg Yess made the winning free throw with five seconds remaining but the Illinois Wesleyan captain admitted he might not have been in that situation but for the outshooting of Jeff Clements. Clements drilled five straight shots within four and one-half minutes as IWU turned back Wheaton, 41-40.
1956: There's a showdown in the making in the collegiate sports world. The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), which concerns itself with the smaller colleges and universities, feels that the NCAA, the oldest collegiate organization in existence, wants to "eliminate" the NAIA.
