PINEHURST, N.C. — Rob Wuethrich of Bloomington fired an 11-over-par 81 on Tuesday in the second round of U.S. Amateur stroke-play qualifying to miss the cut at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club.

Wuethrich parred his first two holes on the No. 2 course, which will host its fourth U.S. Open in 2024, before struggling the rest of the front nine to shoot 42. The Illinois Wesleyan junior finished with a 36-hole total of 153.

Two Illinois State golfers — senior David Perkins of East Peoria (73) and junior Daniel Anfield (76) of Channahon — tied at 157 after playing the No. 4 course for their second round.

The low 64 in the 312-man field advance to match play Wednesday on the No. 2 course. Play was suspended by darkness Tuesday with most of the field completed. It appears the cut will come at 144 or 145.

Brandon Wu of Scarsdale, N.Y., will be the medalist. He followed a 65 on Monday with a 2-over 72 on the No. 2 layout, a stroke ahead of six others.
