NORMAL — Rob Wuethrich and Conner O'Neil rallied late before slipping past Doug Simpson and J.T. Thomas in 22 holes Sunday to highlight championship flight first-round matches Sunday in the Bloomington-Normal Two-Man Best Position Tournament at Weibring Golf Club.
Wuethrich and O'Neil were 3-down after 14 before winning three of the last four holes to force sudden death. It was the only championship flight match to go extra holes as all 16 matches were held.
Defending champions Tom Kearfott and Mike Cushing cruised to a 6 and 5 victory over Tom and Tom Baer. Alan Bardwell and Tyler Weaver, the 2016 champions who didn't defend last year, also posted a 6 and 5 win over Rob and Michael Moser in the upper bracket.
Other upper-bracket winners were Gary-Bryan Brucker, Mike Henry-David Marquardt, Kyle Edwards-Steven Mullins, Adam Havens-Josh Wheeler, Michael-Branden Mounce and Brian Zimmerman-Nolan Harris.
Qualifying medalists Bryan Mounce and Mike Aslinger led the lower bracket by eliminating Terry-Brady Quakenbush, 6 and 5.
Besides Wuethrich-O'Neil, other lower-bracket winners included Cooper Bailey-Brock Hirn, Jacob Anderson-Matt Wettersten, Joe Rieger-Logan Stauffer, Zach Lancaster-Aaron Elzy, Shad Lindsey-Andy Schuster and Tyler Kanski-Mike Shepard.
Championship flight second-round matches must be completed by Thursday.
There were no matches Sunday in the senior division.
