Jacob Mote and Owen Martin each had two hits as University High School's baseball team downed Freeburg, 5-3, in the PBR Metro East Showcase Tournament on Thursday at Belleville.

Jack Sauser (1-0) went four innings, allowing one hit and one run, to pick up the win. Nate Hardman got the final four outs for his first save.

The Pioneers (3-0) opened the tourney on Wednesday by beating Breese Central, 10-0, and Teutopolis, 9-4. U High ends the tourney on Friday against Breese Mater Dei.

Rantoul 4, BHS 1: Rantoul scored three runs in the third and went on to defeat Bloomington in the season opener for both teams at Howard Saar Field.

Freshman Liam McGill and Djabril Thiam each had two hits for the Raiders. BHS starter Jesse Goropesek took the loss, going four innings with seven strikeouts.

GCMS 19, Ridgeview 5: Layne Harden had two hits including a triple while driving in three runs for GCMS (1-0) in a win at Colfax. Teammate Alec Johnson added two hits and three RBIs.

Lexington 12, Midland 4: Trevor Keagle had three hits and three RBIs for Lexington in a win at Varna. Jared Leake added two hits and two RBIs.

GIRLS SOCCER

NCHS 9, Peoria High 0: Nine different players scored as Normal Community rolled to a season-opening victory over Peoria High in a Big 12 Conference match.

Carmen Cornejo, Courtney Dage, Shelby Herrera, Lauren Cornejo, Alexis Ackerman, Leah Ward, Ryann Anderson, Kaitlynn Delveaux, Grace Blair and Kaitlyn Dage scored goals for the Iron. Anderson also had two assists. NCHS, which was ahead 7-0 at halftime, outshot Peoria, 22-0.

Pekin 4, Normal West 1: Audrey Marsaglia's goal off an assist from Olivia Peters wasn't enough as visiting Normal West lost its season opener.

The Wildcats were outshot, 13-5. West goalies Tori Kafer and Malaika Zuern made three and one saves, respectively.

SOFTBALL

Eureka 6, Canton 5: Maddie McCunn stroked a walk-off three-run double in the bottom of the seventh lift host Eureka (1-1) to victory. Quincy Boschulte had three of Eureka's 10 hits.

LeRoy 9, Monticello 1: Kelly Smith had three hits while Danielle Hanshew chipped in two doubles for LeRoy (2-0) in a home win. Charly Warlow (2-0) pitched a two-hitter.

Blue Ridge 10, Iroquois West 2: Freshman Sydnee Evans (1-0) fanned eight in her varsity debut to spark Blue Ridge to victory at Onarga. Avery Fisher had two hits and four RBIs for the Knights while Natalie Tharp had three hits and three stolen bases.

Fisher 11, Urbana 1: Ciara Jackson had a home run among her two hits and drove in two runs for Fisher (1-0) in a five-inning win at Urbana. Sidney Hood added four hits and four RBIs for the Bunnies, who saw Sydney Eichelberger toss a two-hitter.

Lexington 20, Midland 1: Raelyn Payne scored four runs and had three hits and three RBIs as Lexington cruised in a four-inning nonconference game at Varna.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Area pair fall short: Carter Dawson of Pontiac and Joey Byers of Streator failed to advance during Thursday's preliminary round in the COUNTRY Financial Three-Point Showdown.

Dawson sank eight shots while Byers made five in the Class 3A competition. Advancing to Friday's finals were Andrew Buis of Metamora (11), Drew Ringel of Herrin (11), Jimmy Bradish of Sandwich (9) and Carl Anderson of Woodstock (9).
