The Normal Community High School softball team (2-0) opened its season with 5-2 and 7-6 victories at Collinsville (0-3) on Saturday.
Kaci Shickel got the win in the first game, fanning six and walking one. Ella Fletcher had two of the Lady Iron's five hits.
In the nightcap, Allison Kern got the win after fanning five and scattering seven hits. Teammate Mackenzie Nelson had three hits and three RBIs.
Saints win twice: Central Catholic topped Yorkville, 5-4, and Princeville, 11-1, in five innings in the Play the Turf Tournament at Jacksonville. Against Yorkville, the Saints (3-1) got a two-run home run from Scout Paul, who had two hits while driving in four runs. Teammate Kayla Stenger also had two hits as Bailey Coffman (2-1) got the win.
In the second game, Stenger stroked a two-run homer in the second inning. Also driving in two runs apiece were Harley Schade and Kylie Gibbs. Schade (1-0) got the win after fanning nine. Charlie Sartoris and Paul had two hits apiece.
NCHS boys, Eureka girls 6th at Champaign: The Normal Community boys scored 33 points to finish sixth in the 33-team Gene Armer Indoor Invitational at Champaign where the Eureka girls also took sixth among 41 teams with 33 points.
Winning for the NCHS boys were Dishon Hall in the triple jump (44-8) and Reed Wilson in the pole vault (14-3). Olympia's 3,200 relay of Owen Dare, Alec Pfeffer, Charlie Kistner and Logan Wheeler won in 8:33.27. Winning for the Eureka girls was Alexi Fogo in the 3,200 (11:33.71). Teammate Allison Schrock was second in the pole vault (10-6).
Tremont 6th, West 10th at EIU: In the 33-team Class A division of the Eastern Illinois Indoor Invitational at Charleston, Tremont's boys scored 28 points to tie for sixth. In the 34-team Class AA division, Normal West was 10th with 27 points.
The top area finisher in Class A was Tri-Valley pole vaulter Ryan Steiner, who took second at 14-0. Placing second in Class AA were Normal West's Charlie Wetzel in the 800 (2:03.35) and Clinton's Ethan Black in the 3,200 (10:09.80).
Streator boys 3rd, girls 4th: In the Warrior Invitational at Sterling, Streator's boys scored 25 points in third while the girls tallied 25 in fourth. The Bulldogs' Kobie Webb won the boys long jump at 21-0.75 while Lana Krohe won the girls shot put at 34-5.
Normal West splits: Brandon Roth had two doubles among his three hits to drive in two runs for Normal West in an 11-1, six-inning victory over Naperville Central at O'Fallon. Teammate Alec McGinnis had two hits including a double to drive in four runs.
Wildcat pitchers Brandon Roth and C.J. Lewis combined for a one-hitter. Roth, the winner, fanned four and allowed one hit in five innings. Lewis struck out three in one inning.
Later, Normal West fell to Chicago Brother Rice, 2-1, as the Wildcats' lone hit and RBI came from Roth. Austin Collinson took the loss after allowing four hits and two earned runs in seven innings.
BHS 2, Champaign Judah Christian 1: Goals by Denice Watts and Verniece Hernandez paced Bloomington (1-1) to victory over visiting Judah Christian.
Rolling Meadows 2, Normal West 0: Normal West (0-2) was outshot, 6-1, during a loss at Northbrook.
BHS 8th at Troy: The Bloomington tennis team went 1-3 to finish eighth in its 16-team flight at the 30-school Troy Triad Invitational where Evan Turnbull and Gagan Kadadevarmath went 4-0 at No. 1 doubles.
The Purple Raiders (1-3) topped Chatham Glenwood, 3-2, but lost to Belleville East, 4-1; Quincy, 4-1, and Teutopolis, 3-2.
