The Normal West High School girls soccer team topped visiting University High, 3-0, as the 21st annual Intercity Tournament resumed on Thursday.
West coach Val Walker said it took a while for his team to get going following a 1-0 nonconference victory over Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin on Wednesday.
"We were coming off a well-played game where we were pressing the ball, passing well and creating good chances," he said. "When the game started today we regressed to our old habits before we talked about who we are as a team."
Scoring for the Wildcats, who improved to 3-2-2 overall and 2-1-0 in the tournament, were Jess Hieb, Madison Bergeron and Olivia Peters.
U High fell to 3-2-0 and 1-1-0 in the tournament.
NCHS shuts out Manual: Normal Community improved to 6-0 with its sixth shutout, a 9-0 victory at Peoria Manual. The Iron are 2-0 in the Big 12 Conference.
Goals came from Caelyn Steffens, Carmen Cornejo, Shannon Tomlinson, Megan Seger, Shelby Herrera, Katy Quinn, Ryann Anderson, Sabrina Kosharek and Emma Spader.
Kosharek had three assists and Grace Blair two. Notching one assist apiece were Quinn, Seger, Angela Leone and Samantha Churchey.
Shanks, Central roll: Lauren Shanks had a hand in all of Central Catholic's goals as the Saints (2-3) defeated Olympia, 10-0, at White Oak Park. She netted six goals and was credited with four assists.
Keira Hadley added two goals for Central with Caroline O'Connor and Julia Godsey also scored. Kylee Hadley had four saves as Central outshot Olympia, 12-4.
U High sweeps: Winning pitcher Owen Martin (1-0) helped his cause with a two-run home run in the fifth inning for University High (10-1, 5-0) as it completed a doubleheader sweep of host Springfield Southeast (2-6, 0-6). The Pioneers won both five-inning games by scores of 13-1.
In the opener, Paul Africano had a double to drive in three runs for U High while Park Mathieson and Matt Mier drove in two runs apiece. Chris Cuppini (4-0) got the win.
In the nightcap, Jacob Mote had two hits and drove in three runs while Africano drove in two. Martin fanned four and walked one in five innings.
Tremont no-hits Havana: Silas Israel joined relievers Luke Barrow and Isaac Lennington to combine on a no-hitter for Tremont in a 7-1 victory at Havana. Silas fanned three in two innings, Barrow seven in 4⅓ innings and Lennington one in ⅔ inning.
Mier, Tri-Valley triumph: Matt Mier had two doubles to drive in four runs for Tri-Valley in a 6-0 victory over visiting Lexington.
Blue Ridge tips Fisher: Landon Magenheimer hit a walk-off infield single in the eighth inning for Blue Ridge (5-4, 1-1) in a 3-2 victory over visiting Fisher. (2-2-1, 0-1).
Clanton, Hood lead Fisher: Sidney Hood and Becca Clanton each belted a grand slam in a 12-run fourth inning as Fisher defeated Blue Ridge, 17-4, at Farmer City.
Olympia swamps Monticello: Kalleigh Harris had two doubles among her three hits to drive in three runs for Olympia in an 11-1, five-inning win over visiting Monticello.
WFC romps: Shea Moritz had a triple and a double among her three hits to drive in four runs for host Woodland-Flanagan-Cornell in a 17-0, five-inning win over Midland. Winning pitcher August Gillman fanned nine in five innings.
