Led by titles at No. 1 singles and Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, the University High School boys tennis team won the 18-team Bloomington Invitational on Saturday.

U High totaled 38 points to prevail over runner-up St. Charles North, which had 33.

Pioneers' senior Dorath Chamarthi took the No. 1 singles title with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jared Thomas of Champaign Centennial. Senior Thomas Moh and freshman Tyler Bowers prevailed at No. 1 doubles, downing a St. Charles North duo, 6-1, 6-0, in the finals.

The No. 2 doubles crown was won by senior Carter Burk and junior Brevin Knight, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, over another St. Charles North tandem.

U High's Nihar Mothikuru was second at No. 2 singles, while Bloomington's Gagan Kadadevarmath and Evan Turnbull took third at No. 1 doubles.


Eureka girls win at Metamora: The Eureka girls scored 108 points to win the 11-team Metamora Invitational. Normal West was second (90) followed by Normal Community (88). For the boys, Metamora won with 130 followed by NCHS (96) and Eureka (94).

Eureka's Amy Pineda swept the 100 (12.90) and long jump (17-6¾) and ran on the winning 800 relay (1:49.35) while Normal West's Whitney Bozarth captured the 300 hurdles (48.89) and triple jump (35-10).

For the boys, Dishon Hall of NCHS swept the long jump (20-10½) and triple jump (46-2¼).

Wetzel wins at Belleville: Charlie Wetzel won the 3,200 in 9:38.76 to help Normal West finish 18th with 17.5 points in the 32-team Belleville West Invitational. 

EPG sweeps Mendota titles: The El Paso-Gridley boys scored 141 points to win the Don Gooden Memorial Invitational at Mendota where the EPG girls tied Bureau Valley for first with 144 points.

Winning for the EPG boys were Noah Smith in the 1,600 (4:46.91) and 3,200 (9:57.07), Kollin Schlipf in the 110 hurdles (16.52) and 300 hurdles (42.89), Kaden Barth in the high jump (tie at 6-0) and Anthony Hornsby in the shot put (43-9¼).

For the girls, EPG's Makenna Parkhouse swept the hurdle events (17.30 and 49.26). Other Titan winners were Ruby Slightom in the 800 (2:28.31), Cate Atkins in the 1,600 (5:54.14) and Charlene Hamilton in the 3,200 (13:13.25). EPG also won the 1,600 relay (4:11.61).

Saints 2nd in own invite: The Central Catholic boys (128.5) and girls (159) both finished second in the Central Catholic Invitational at Bloomington where Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin (180) won the boys title while Decatur St. Teresa (184) captured the girls crown.

Winning among area boys were Cornerstone's Ernie Waterson in the 800 (2:06.50) and Central Catholic's Jaren Means in the discus (136-10), Sam Mason in the high jump (6-0) and Isaac Whitaker in the pole vault (13-0). Central also won the 400 relay (46.42) and 3,200 relay (9:17.04).

Winning for the Saint girls were Sierra Godsey in the 100 (13.79), Anna Zlatic in the 1,600 (6:03.93) and Ella Larson in the triple jump (34-1). The Saints also won the 400 relay (52.88), 1,600 relay (4:36.74) and 3,200 relay (10:39.23).

Two Prairie Central winners: Prairie Central's Wyatt Steidinger won the high jump (6-3) and Chandlar Ifft the pole vault (15-6) at the Rantoul Invitational. Bloom took the team title and Prairie Central was 12th in a 15-team field.


Normal West romps: In a five-inning game at Urbana, Normal West (8-4, 1-0) won, 16-0, in five innings. Cody Hardt homered and Austin Collinson drove in three runs on three hits for the Wildcats. Will Kafer also had three RBIs.

NCHS loses squeaker: Nick Stoner drove in the lone run for Normal Community (6-2, 0-1) during a 2-1 loss at Champaign Central. Griffin McCluskey (1-1) took the loss after fanning eight in five innings.

BHS swept: Bloomington (3-9, 0-1) lost by scores of 3-1 and 4-2 at Peoria Notre Dame. In the first game, Ben Wellman had the Purple Raiders' lone RBI. In the nightcap, Ethan Crutcher stroked an RBI double for BHS.

Saints drop two: Visiting Aurora Central Catholic downed Central Catholic by scores of 4-3 and 12-6. In the nightcap, Central Catholic's Patrick Mulcahey had a home run and Gage Juarez had four hits. In the first game, Braden Glowacki and Mulcahey each had two hits.

The Saints fell to 2-9.

Mount Pulaski wins: Jonathan Shehorn's walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning made host Mount Pulaski (6-3) a 1-0 winner over Decatur MacArthur. Winning pitcher Logan DeRight (2-0) fanned nine while tossing a two-hitter.

GCMS splits: Eureka College recruit Nathan Garard got the win as GCMS won game two of a twin bill, 3-2, over visiting Watseka. In the first game, Garard had a triple and a double in a 4-2 loss.

Tri-Valley edges Hoopeston: Braden Zenor had three hits and three RBIs for Tri-Valley in a 10-9 victory over visiting Hoopeston Area.


Pontiac goes to 9-0: Stellar pitching performances kept host Pontiac undefeated with a 1-0 win over Limestone and 3-1 conquest of Reed-Custer. Amanda Fox struck out 19 against Reed-Custer with the visitors' only base hit and run coming on a first-inning homer. Sydney Barnett answered with a home run for Pontiac (9-0). Regan Krause hurled a one-hit shutout of Limestone and struck out 11.

BHS tops Urbana: A two-run homer by Danielle Shuey and a solo shot by Maddie Christiansen sparked Bloomington (2-7, 0-1) to a 4-1 victory over visiting Urbana. Winning pitcher Ellie Vetter (1-6) fanned 13.

Tremont clips Saints: Hannah Nguyen homered among her three hits and had five RBIs in Tremont's 7-3 win over Central Catholic at Bloomington's McGraw Park.

Paige McAllister struck out six over the first four innings for the win, and Abby Leber worked the final three frames for a save. Scout Paul stroked two of the Saints' six hits.

U High dumps Rantoul: Jen Kuhn and Addie Steward each had two hits and three RBIs to spark University High to an 8-3 win at Rantoul. Maddie Roop pitched the first five innings for the win, and Kuhn finished to notch a save.

Prairie Central splits: Natalie Graf had three hits including a three-run homer in the third inning for Prairie Central (7-5) during a 16-1, four-inning victory over visiting Lexington. Earlier, Prairie Central lost to Beecher, 8-7, despite Addison Casner's two homers and one by Kenna Skaggs.

Fisher tips Maroa-Forsyth: Homers by Taylor May and winning pitcher Sidney Hood keyed Fisher to a 6-5 victory over visiting Maroa-Forsyth. Kylee Bishop had three hits including two doubles for the Bunnies.


BHS wins tourney: In the Champaign Judah Christian Tournament, Bloomington (5-6) topped the host school on penalty kids in the championship game. Earlier, BHS downed Peoria Christian, 2-0.

Against Peoria Christian, Denise Watts had one goal and one assist. Noele Bess also scored and Grace Marcy had an assist.

NCHS blanks Moline: Goals by Grace Blair and Shannon Tomlinson off assists from Kaitlynn Delveaux and Katy Quinn powered Normal Community (7-0-1) to a 2-0 victory over visiting Moline.

NCHS outshot its guest, 13-2, as goalie Savannah Henson made two saves.

U Highs swamps Lanphier: University High (3-4-1) won, 9-0, at Springfield Lanphier. Among the highlights was senior Piper Schuring scoring the first goal of her career.

The Pioneers received three goals from Julia Herman and two from Meredith Heller. Adding one apiece were Allison Heller, Celeste Noraian and Kendall Bray.

Bree Cordray had two assists while Noraian, Alison Heller, Meredith Heller and Olivia Checchi had one each.
