Ellie Weltha broke the Bloomington High School career home run record and threw a two-hit shutout on Senior Day as the Purple Raiders blanked East Peoria, 3-0, in a nonconference softball game Friday in Bloomington.

Weltha's two-run blast in the sixth inning was the 41st of her BHS career, topping the previous mark of 40 set by Hannah Ploense. In the circle, Weltha (5-14) walked three and stuck out eight.

Another senior, Morgan Muntz, had two doubles for BHS (8-18).

West splits in tourney: Bailey Turner threw a seven-hit shutout as Normal West downed Rock Island, 3-0, to open the Limestone Tournament at Bartonville. Limestone later edged the Wildcats, 4-3.

Turner (8-3) struck out five and walked none. Emma Boitnott hit a solo homer for West (16-12) against Limestone, while Mikayla Fairfield and Saige Cramer each had two hits.

NCHS falls: Alyssa Martin's RBI single accounted for all of the scoring in Washington's 1-0 victory over visiting Normal Community (15-6).

Mackenzie Leonard (11-3) took the loss for the Iron after fanning six, walking four and allowing four hits.

Blue Ridge prevails: Avery Place had four hits and four RBIs for Blue Ridge in an 11-5 victory over host Deer Creek-Mackinaw.

TENNIS

NCHS dominates doubles: In the doubles portion of the Big 12 Conference Tournament at Peoria, Normal Community swept the titles.

Parker Honegger and Shanku Nair won at No. 1 doubles while Nachiketh Rotte and James Broach prevailed at No. 2 and Manish Pathuri and Adrash Kurumbail triumphed at No. 3.

For Bloomington, Gagan Kadadevarmath and Evan Turnbull placed third at No. 1 doubles while teammates Adam Hanson and Prithiv Kumar were second at No. 2. The Purple Raiders' Robby Pratt and Vinay Vattikuti were third at No. 3.

BASEBALL

U High downs Lanphier: Chris Cuppini homered and doubled while driving in three runs for University High (23-8, 13-3) in a 6-2 victory in a Central State Eight Conference game at Springfield Lanphier. Teammate Parker Mathieson had two triples among his three hits. Jacob Mote also had three hits, including a double and triple.

U High reliever Nate Hardman (2-3) fanned 13 in six innings while allowing one walk and three hits.

Central swamps Eureka: Gage Juarez had three hits and two RBIs for Central Catholic (11-12) in a 13-3, five-inning victory over visiting Eureka. Teammate Braden Glowacki had three hits, including a double and a triple.

Winning pitcher Sam Tallon (3-0) fanned two and scattered four hits over five innings.

Fieldcrest dumps Blue Ridge: Travis Cook drove in three runs to spark Fieldcrest to a 12-2, six-inning victory over Blue Ridge at Minonk. Teammate Derek May chipped in a double and a triple.

Pontiac tops Morris: Carter Dawson had four hits and two RBIs for Pontiac in a 5-2 victory over visiting Morris.

BOYS TRACK

U High boys win league: With Jared Schuckman providing victories in the 800 (1:58.56) and 1,600 (4:20.22), University High scored 136 points to win the Central State Eight Conference Meet by 17 points over runner-up Springfield at Springfield.

The Pioneers also won the 800 relay (1:32.56) and 3,200 relay (8:02.65) and saw Cooper Wilken capture the 3,200 (10:09.22). The 800 relay included Joseph Brown, Lamar Conard, Caleb Diffor and Chase Hari. The 3,200 relay featured Zachary Wolford, Nathan Clay, Sean Supan and Matthew Zacharias.

GIRLS TRACK

U High takes second: University High's Lauren Seaver won the pole vault as the Pioneers finished second to Dunlap in the Class 2A Macomb Sectional completed late Thursday night. Dunlap won with 184 points, while U High scored 59 and fourth-place Eureka 42.5.

Eureka freshman Madison Colburn captured the discus with a 113-10 effort.

U High's McKenna Sapp cleared 10-7 to take second in the pole vault to Seaver. The Pioneers also advanced second in the 400, 800 and 1,600 relays and qualified third in the 3,200 relay.

U High's 1,600 relay of Jessica McDowell, Brooklyn Mosley, Rachel Kullman and Carrington Walker sped 4:01.14 to break the 1994 school record of 4:04.83 set by Mandy Tucker, Erin Mapel, Sarah Stuckey and Chela Kapanga.

The Pioneers' 400 relay (49.64) included McDowell, Mosley, Walker and Courtney Kowalski. U High's 800 relay (1:45.85) featured McDowell, Kullman, Mosley and Walker while its 3,200 relay (9:52.62) included Emmy Mussey, Lizzy Zacharias, Mackie Madix and Ella Bittner.

Eureka advanced its runner-up 3,200 relay (9:45.34) with Courtney Heffren, Alexi Fogo, Tessa Wiegand and Emma Argo along with its third-place 1,600 relay (4:05.78) of Amy Pineda, Natalie Bardwell, Wiegand and Heffren, who was a third-placer qualifier in the 400 (59.41).

Other qualifiers were Eureka's Allison Schrock in the pole vault (tie 5th, 109-1) and Argo in the 1,600 (4th, 5:13.03).

Tinsley leads Ridgeview-Lexington: Mya Tinsley won the 100 (12.94) and 200 (26.69) to help the Ridgeview-Lexington co-op capture the Class 1A PBL Sectional title late Thursday. The Mustangs had 72 points, followed by PBL (63.5), GCMS (62) and Central Catholic (50).

Ridgeview also got victories from Jayden Standish in the discus (116-5) and its 400 relay (50.96). That relay included Tinsley, 400 qualifier Jules Grunloh (1:02.10), Stacia Landry and Tia Hardt. The same four advanced second in the 800 relay (1:49.05). The Mustangs' runner-up 1,600 relay (4:16.23) included Grunloh, Landry, Hardt and Layken McGuire.

GCMS' Delanie Dykes won the 400 (1:00.58) and 800 (2:23.07). The Falcons' 3,200 relay (10:18.98) also won thanks to Jacey Goin, Kennedy Fanson, Abigail Sizemore and Leah Martin.

Other area winners were Central Catholic's Natalia Garcia in the high jump (5-4), Windsor Roberts of Tri-Valley in the pole vault (11-0), Blue Ridge's Elizabeth Bowns in the shot put (37-3) and Alayna Stalter of Fisher in the 100 hurdles (15.50). Stalter also advanced second in the 300 hurdles (48.94).

Tri-Valley's 3,200 relay advanced second (10:26.42) with Hanna Christianson, Natalie Garneau, Caitlin McCane and Charlotte Watson. The Vikings' Natalie Johnson qualified third in the pole vault (9-0).

Other qualifiers were Central's Abby Lewis in the 1,600 (2nd, 5:38.47), Sarah Stephens in the high jump (2nd, 5-0) and Ella Larson in the triple jump (2nd, 34-3), Dwight's Julie Ramsey in the 100 hurdles (2nd, 16.48), LeRoy's Emmerson Tarr in the 800 (2nd, 2:26.91) and GCMS' Claire Retherford in the discus (2nd, 114-4).

Unsicker wins 1,600: Lucy Unzicker of the Lowpoint-Washburn/Roanoke-Benson co-op captured the 1,600 (5:38.06) at the Class 1A Farmington Sectional on Thursday. LWRB placed seventh with 49 points. Bushnell-Prairie City won with 92.

LWRB also advanced Madalyn Oltman in the 100 (12.94) and 200 (26.50) along with her 800 relay (1:49.72), which included Jadie Knecht, Sydney Heston and Shania Vasquez.
