DECATUR — Northern Illinois football recruit Amir Brummett scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the first quarter as the Decatur MacArthur High School basketball team bolted to a 30-15 lead after one period on Saturday.
The Generals went on to a 66-53 victory over University High, which fell to 8-9 overall and 4-3 in the Central State Eight Conference. Brummett's brother, Armon, added 15 points. Amir Brummett sank five 3-pointers in the first period.
U High outscored its host the final three quarters, 38-36, but the damage had been done. Alex Wood led the Pioneers with 16 points and four steals while Mark Widdel added 13 points and Doug Holmes four assists.
"The whole story of the game was the first quarter," said U High coach Andrew McDowell. "We know Amir and Armand are great players. Amir kept backing up and hitting them deeper and deeper.
"Our kids really battled. They got tougher defensively and covered him better on the 3-point line the rest of the way. I was really proud of our guys after a tough loss to Glenwood by one on Friday. We cut the lead to eight in the fourth quarter. We could have quit, but the kids showed they still had a lot of fight and pride in them."
MacArthur improved to 10-7 and 6-2.
