Junior forward Sydney Shanks registered 25 points, 10 steals and six rebounds as the Central Catholic High School girl's basketball team shook off a sluggish first half to steamroll to a 63-43 Corn Belt Conference win over Eureka on Monday at Cvengros Gymnasium in Bloomington.
The Saints (15-6, 6-4), who trailed 24-23 at intermission, took control with a 26-5 third quarter run sparked by ten straight points from freshman Sarah Brady.
"The kids responded well to our halftime adjustments", said Central head coach Debbie Coffman. "We focused on our shutdown rotation defensively and probably ran our offense the best we have all season".
Kate Hoerdemann chipped in nine points while Lexi Davis added six points along with six assists.
Eureka was led by Natlie Bardwell and Serena Meiss who scored 12 points each.
University High 48, Prairie Central 31: Raven Hughes and Amber Nanni combined for 22 points as the Pioneers outscored the host Hawks, 25-10, over the middle two quarters at the Prairie Central MLK Tournament at Fairbury.
Chante Stonewall added 10 points for U High which held a 26-22 lead at the half before limiting Prairie Central to just two points in the third quarter.
Kiana Coomber had 10 points to lead Prairie Central.
Iroquois West 64, Clifton Central 17: Iroquois West took an 18-2 first quarter lead en route to a Sangamon Valley Conference Tournament win at Clifton. Senior guard Elena Sanchez led the Raiders with 11 points and four steals. Grace Schroeder and freshman Meara Tilstra had nine rebounds each.
Cissna Park 51, Momence 28: Lexi Knake and Addison Stoller each scored 17 points as the Timberwolves (18-2) won their Sangamon Valley Conference Tournament opener.
Watseka 54, Dwight 36: Libby Beyer led Dwight with 10 points in an SVC tournament loss to Watseka at Clifton. Rachel Dawson and Daly Galloway each scored eight points for the Trojans.
Lincoln 35, Jacksonville 25: The Railsplitters held the hosts to 15.4 percent shooting from the field in the first half and 27.3 percent for the game in taking the win in the Central State Eight Tournament at Jacksonville.
Gavin Block and Aaron Hopp combined for 28 of Lincoln's 35 points in the defensive struggle, with Block scoring 16 while also pulling down nine rebounds.
Grayslake North 64, Mahomet-Seymour 59: Grayslake North used a big third quarter to gain a victory over Mahomet-Seymour at the Washington Invitational. Christian Romine scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds while Conner Diedrich contributed 17 points for the Bulldogs.
Dwight 70, Beecher 30: Drew Jensen scored 14 points to lead Dwight over Beecher at Dwight. Justin Fox had 10 points for the Trojans (16-2) while Drew Travers added nine.
