The Intercity has expanded its footprint in the Associated Press Class 4A boys state basketball rankings, placing Normal West, Bloomington and Normal Community in the top 10.

Normal West (10-2) moved into the rankings at No. 7 after capturing the Pekin Insurance Holiday Tournament championship with a victory over Class 3A No. 3 Springfield Lanphier. The Wildcats have won nine in a row heading into Friday night’s game at Peoria Richwoods.

Bloomington (10-3), which was seventh in the preseason AP poll, came in at No. 9 after placing fifth at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament. Following the Purple Raiders at No. 10 was Normal Community (12-2), which won the State Farm Holiday Classic large school title.

BHS plays host to No. 6-ranked Danville (11-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a Big 12 Conference game, while NCHS has a Big 12 contest at Urbana.

Also making its top 10 debut in voting by a statewide panel of sportswriters was Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley in Class 2A. The Falcons were ranked No. 7 after improving to 13-1 with a 47-41 victory over Ridgeview in the Sages Holiday Hoopla championship game at Monticello.

Despite the loss, Ridgeview (11-2) remained at No. 1 in the 1A poll with 95 points and four first-place votes. Other top-ranked teams were Chicago Simeon in 4A, Chicago Morgan Park in 3A and Chicago Orr in 2A.

Area boys teams that received votes but did not make the top 10 were Deer Creek-Mackinaw and Central Catholic in Class 2A.

On the girls side, Normal Community (12-4) moved into a tie for No. 10 in Class 4A after finishing as runner-up in the State Farm Holiday Classic large school division. The Iron lost to Class 3A top-ranked Morton in the championship game.

Eureka (14-3) remained in the No. 7 spot in 2A, while Heyworth was among the 2A teams receiving votes. Other area teams to receive votes but not crack the top 10 were Normal West in 4A, Central Catholic in 3A and Ridgeview in 1A.
