Chatham Glenwood held host Parkside scoreless until the final minute of the first half and went on to post a 27-18 victory in the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 4A seventh grade girls state basketball tournament Thursday.
Parkside’s first basket came when Kate Lorenz made a breakaway layup after Natalie Freeman blocked a Glenwood shot. Glenwood (22-2) led 15-6 at intermission.
Parkside pulled within 17-12 with 1:38 left in the third quarter on a steal and layup by Abby Thompson, who finished with six points. Glenwood answered with a 6-0 run. Freeman scored twice in the final 25.2 seconds to finish with 10 points and end the scoring.
Parker Bundy led Glenwood with six points.
El Paso-Gridley 4th in 3A: Michelle Bigger scored 12 points and Grace Murphy 10, but it wasn’t enough as El Paso-Gridley (22-6) fell, 28-26, to Maroa-Forsyth (19-5) in the Class 3A state third-place game at Assumption.
The game was tied at 26 until Brenna Finck, who finished with 21 points, sank a free throw to put Maroa-Forsyth ahead to stay with 27.1 seconds left.
Roanoke-Benson 4th in 2A: Roanoke-Benson (17-8) received four points from Beckie Hodel in a 32-16 loss to Champaign St. Matthew (26-1) in the Class 2A state third-place game at Riverton.
