GIBSON CITY - The Heart of Illinois Conference boys’ all-star basketball team held off a late rally by the Sangamon Valley stars to take an 88-84 victory on Saturday night.

Fieldcrest’s Nathan Ropp scored 13 points and Heyworth’s Spencer Cambell added to lead the HOIC squad, which opened up a 21-10 first quarter lead and increased the advantage to 42-25 at the half.

They led by as many as 25 points midway through the third quarter before the SVC began to whittle away at the lead and pulled to within 84-82 with under a minute to play.

Four straight free throws by Ropp and fellow Fieldcrest standout Taylor Baxter in the closing 30 seconds of the game allowed the HOIC to stave off the rally.

Marcel Maiden of Watseka led the SVC with 12 points.

The SVC girls’ team took a 65-58 win over the HOIC in the first game.

Maggie Fitzgerald of Champaign St. Thomas More scored 15 points to pace the SVC all-stars’ win over the HOIC girls earlier Saturday.

Taylor Rubarts of PBL added 13 for the SVC. Savannah Piety of Fisher took game-high honors with 24 points for the HOIC, which never led in the game.
