Normal West High School's basketball team, coming off an emotional overtime loss to Bloomington on Friday night, rebounded with two victories Saturday in the Rockton Hononegah MLK Classic at Rockton.

The Wildcats (7-12) rode a career-high 26 points from junior Alec McGinnis to a 73-64 triumph over Hononegah, then got 20 points from Shea Cupples in a 48-45 win over DeKalb.

McGinnis also had six assists against Hononegah and made seven 3-pointers. Sophomore Corey Walker had 17 points and eight rebounds, while Cupples contributed 15 points and nine assists. Evan Hutson added five assists.

Against DeKalb, Cupples had five assists and three steals. Walker and Carson Camp scored eight points each, with Walker grabbing five rebounds.

"It's been an interesting less than 24 hours of basketball," West coach Brian Cupples said. "We had to expend a lot of energy in the game last night. My team showed great character and great effort today."

NCHS 52, Neuqua Valley 45: CJ Wilbourn scored a team-high 15 points in Normal Community's tourney-opening win in the Hononegah MLK Classic. The Ironmen used a 23-point second quarter to lead 39-22 at the half.

Ben Witzig added nine points and Daylen Boddie eight for NCHS.

NCHS 55, Hononegah 43: Boddie's 17 points powered the Ironmen past the hosts in the final game of the day.

Wilbourn added 16 points for NCHS (15-3), which led 32-20 at the half. Blake Foster chipped in nine points on three 3-pointers for the Ironmen.

"Both games we came out and shot the ball really well, especially from the 3-point line," NCHS coach Dave Witzig said. "We shot well, got some stops and got the lead. The second half we didn't play as well, but we did enough to get two good wins to start the weekend."

WRESTLING

West 13th at tourney: Joe Jarvis (126 pounds) and Daniel Valdes (145) placed fifth and Demetrius Turrentine (152) took sixth place to lead Normal West to a 13th-place finish in the Tom Lahey Wrestling Tournament at Stagg High School in Palos Hills.

The Wildcats had 41 points in the 17-team event. Orland Park Sandburg won with 247.

DANCE

West earns state berth: Normal West placed fifth in the Class 2A Normal West Sectional, earning a berth in next weekend's Competitive Dance State Finals at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington. The Wildcats had 81.3 points.

Dunlap and Ottawa shared first place with 85.43. The top six teams advanced to state. Bloomington took seventh with an 80.23.
