Area players Bailey Coffman of Central Catholic High School, Ben Witzig of Normal Community and Jackson Castleman of Olympia were among the four recipients of the 2019 State Farm Holiday Classic Scholarship award.
Each will receive a $1,500 scholarship to go directly to their college of choice for tuition costs. The other recipient was Nicolette McDonald of Chicago St. Ignatius.
A committee of current former educators chose the winners from among eligible seniors who participated in the tournament based on leadership skills and academic performance. Applicants were asked to demonstrate their experiences in student activities and community service, and required to submit an essay titled “How my high school sports experience helped prepare me for success in higher education.”
Coffman has earned 12 varsity letters at Central, playing basketball, volleyball and softball. She will attend Millikin and play basketball and softball while majoring in Business Administration.
Witzig played basketball all four years at NCHS and also participated in track. He will attend the University of Iowa and major in Civil Engineering.
Castleman earned nine varsity letters in five different sports at Olympia. In addition to playing basketball all four years, he participated in football, baseball, swimming/diving and track. He will attend Augustana College and major in education.
McDonald played basketball and volleyball at St. Ignatius. She plans to attend Washington and Lee University in Virginia and major in Computer Science.
