CHAMPAIGN — Normal Community High School built a 15-point halftime lead and held on in the second half to beat Champaign Central, 56-48, in a Big 12 Conference basketball game Friday night.
CJ Wilbourn and Evan Pogge paced the Ironmen (5-2, 1-1) with 18 points each. Wilbourn went 10 of 10 at the line while Pogge scored 14 points in the first half.
The Maroons (3-3) led 16-12 after the first quarter before NCHS almost pitched a shutout in the second quarter. The Ironmen outscored Champaign, 22-3, to capture a 34-19 lead at the intermission.
"We played a great first half," said NCHS coach Dave Witzig. "It's not easy playing at Champaign Central. Evan Pogge had a lot of good, down low scoring."
Champaign cut the deficit to 41-32 heading into the fourth quarter before NCHS made 11 of 12 free throws in the final eight minutes to clinch the win.
Gus Rossow paced Champaign with 14 points. The Maroons' leading scorer, Khailieo Terry, was held to four points.
"Terry was averaging 22 and we wanted to make it hard for him to score. We did a good job on him," said Witzig.
