The Bloomington High School boys cross country team, ranked No. 15 in Class 2A, edged Normal Community, 54-60, to win the seven-team NCHS Open at Maxwell Park on Saturday where the University High girls scored 21 points to outdistance runner-up NCHS by 27.

U High freshman Lindsey Wolters passed NCHS freshman Justine Parks in the final mile of the 3-mile event to win, 18:59 to 19:06.

Also scoring for the Pioneer girls were Riley Madix (3rd, 19:39), Mackie Madix (4th, 19:45), Tasha Schuckman (6th, 19:47) and Emmy Mussey (7th, 19:49).

The top area boy was Nick Doud of BHS in second at 15:59, six seconds behind IVC's Owen Habeger.

Other boys scoring for BHS were Bradyn Olmstead (6th, 16:18), Austin Bicknell (11th, 16:35), Drew Gibson (16th, 16:43) and Evan Turnbull (19th, 16:56).

West boys 4th, girls 7th: Tyler Dunn placed seventh in the Silver Streak Invitational at Galesburg, clocking 16:22 to help Normal West place fourth (124). The Wildcat girls, led by eighth-placer Mara Smith (19:28), were seventh (162).

Jones wins at Rochester: Lincoln's Blake Jones won the Rochester Invitational in 15:27 while Will Dionesotes of eighth-place Central Catholic took second in 15:46. Tremont's Leland Summer was sixth (16:09). The top area team in the 15-team meet was fourth-place Clinton (129). Tremont was fifth (132).

In the girls race, Delavan's Katie Springer led area entrants in fourth (19:01.) while Clinton's Payne Turney was sixth (19:15).

Dee-Mack runs 4th, 8th: The Deer Creek-Mackinaw boys scored 109 points to finish fourth in the 10-team Canton Invitational with 109 points. Gary Cates led the Chiefs in 10th (16:46). The Dee-Mack girls were eighth (179).


U High, Central Catholic go 1-2: University High scored 37 points to top runner-up Central Catholic by five in the Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin Invitational.

Pioneer winners included Amaya Fernandes at No. 2 singles, Katie Feeley at No. 3 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Grace Matheis and Anna Huber. Other U High placers were Abby Totten (3rd at No. 1 singles) and Stephanie Chow and Calis Lim (3rd at No. 2 doubles).

Central Catholic second placers were Renata Lee at No. 2 singles, Maggie Stopa and Charlie Sartoris at No. 1 doubles and Camryn Restivo and Caroline O'Connor at No. 2 doubles. Other Saint placers were Carley Hundman (3rd at No. 3 singles) and Clare Wieland (4th at No. 1 singles).

BHS 3rd at Pekin: Bloomington finished third in the Pekin Invitational. Alison Hanson placed second for the Purple Raiders at No. 2 singles while Olivia Falls was second at No. 3 singles.


Cornerstone splits: Cornerstone (4-4) split a pair of games in the Herscher Shootout, defeating Herscher, 2-0, and losing to Elgin St. Edward, 7-1.

Cornerstone's Brian Matipa and Moses Kabuswe scored against Herscher while Clay Damkoehler provided an assist.

Against Elgin St. Edward, a 2016 super-sectional qualifier, Matipa scored off an assist from Kabuswe.


Saints place 6th: Central Cathholic (5-4) went 3-2 in the Champaign Centennial Tournament to place sixth.

The Saints downed East Rockford, 25-15, 25-11, and topped the Centennial JV, 25-14, 25-18.

Champaign Central beat Central Catholic twice by scores of 25-21, 21-25, 15-7 and 25-16, 26-24. Tournament champion Kaneland downed the Saints, 25-17, 25-15.

The Saints' all-tournament selection, Morgan Koch, had 36 kills, eight blocks, 27 service points and 10 aces on the day. Mallory Bergbower added 22 kills, 29 digs, 34 service points and 10 aces. Kate Moorman-Wolfe had 93 assists while Emily Butt had 35 digs.

U High 5th of 14: University High went 3-2 to place fifth in the 14-team Edwardsville Tiger Classic.

In pool play, the Pioneers defeated Collinsville, 25-17, 25-19, but lost to Eureka (Mo.), 25-14, 25-21, and Breese Mater Dei, 25-14, 25-21.

In the Silver Bracket, U High defeated Farmington, 25-19, 22-25, 15-11, and then defeated Bloomington in the Silver Championship match, 25-21, 21-25, 15-13.

U High's Illyana Lin had 26 kills for the day while Isabel Schaefbauer had 51 assists and Alexis Engst 46. Amber Juarez had 60 digs.

BHS 6th in tourney: Bloomington (5-3) went 2-3 to finish sixth in the Edwardsville Tiger Classic. The Purple Raiders defeated Chatham Glenwood, 25-12, 25-21, and O'Fallon, 25-22, 25-13.

BHS lost to Breese Mater Dei, 25-19, 25-18, and Eureka (Mo.), 29-31, 25-19, 15-11.

All-tournament pick Corinna Jones of BHS finished the tourney with 106 assists and four blocks. Teammate Leah Anderson had 33 kills while Grace Sanders chipped in 30 kills, 42 digs and 22 service points. Avery Carr chipped in 37 digs, four aces and four blocks.

Streator goes 1-4: Streator won one of five matches in the Rochelle Tournament. The Bulldogs topped Ottawa, 221-6, 17-21, 15-7. They also lost twice to Lisle by scores of 21-16, 21-18 and 26-24, 25-23. Rockford Lutheran downed the Bulldogs, 21-11, 21-13. Roanoke-Benson also topped Streator, 25-13, 25-17.
