Led by runner-up Lexi Onsrud, University High School's girls golf team captured the Class 2A Champaign Central Sectional championship on Monday at the U of I Orange Course in Savoy.
Onsrud shot a 75 to lead U High to a 327 total, 14 shots better than second-place Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin. Third-place Edwardsville (345) also earned a spot at the state tournament beginning Friday at Hickory Point Golf Course in Forsyth, while Normal Community was fourth at 347 to miss qualifying by two strokes.
Also counting toward U High's team score were sophomore Jadyn Spinks (82), senior Maddison Murphy (82) and sophomore Jaiden Mapagay (88).
"It was a very good day," U High coach Greg Dennis said. "The first thing we talked about was shooting the average. I told them, 'Play to your average, everything else will fall in place.'
"Lexi stays mentally tough. She was sick this morning in the bus. I talked to her and she settled down. She proceeded to go out and shoot a 75."
Normal Community's Allison Enchelmayer shot 84 to advance to state as an individual qualifier.
Pontiac Sectional: Central Catholic cruised to the title at Pontiac Elks Country Club. The Saints' 349 total was 27 strokes ahead of runner-up Geneseo, with Metamora (382) also advancing to this weekend's state tournament at Decatur's Red Tail Run Golf Club.
Pontiac's Ali Schrock, the defending state champion, fired an even-par 72 to earn medalist honors by five strokes over Carolyn Pacocha of Eureka. Other area individuals advancing were two freshmen, Pontiac's Dani Grace Schrock (79) and Eureka's Allison Pacocha (81).
Katie Steinman shot 83 to lead Central Catholic to its second straight sectional title. Kylie Hundman added 84, while Faith Glazebrook (85) and Madison Clark (97) also counted toward the team total.
Auburn Sectional: GCMS senior Shannon Spangler shot 87 to earn an individual qualifying spot for the state tournament. GCMS placed sixth as a team with a 391 total, while Tri-Valley was eighth at 409 at Edgewood Golf Course.
St. Thomas More, led by medalist Alaina Bowie's even-par 72, took the title with 349, with Williamsville (360) and Rochester (367) also advancing.
Edwardsville Sectional: Junior Brevin Knight tied for second with a 77 and led University High to second place and a spot in this weekend's state tournament at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington.
U High's 326 total was nine strokes behind winner Homewood-Flossmoor. Lockport also advanced by taking third at 330, two strokes ahead of Normal Community and Edwardsville. Homewood-Flossmoor's Hayden Henry was medalist with 74.
The Pioneers, who were bumped up this year after tying for third in last year's Class 2A State, also counted seniors Ethan Huynh (81) and Cody Surma (84) and sophomore Reece Tennison (84).
Lemont Sectional: Pontiac senior Griffin Nyi won a three-man playoff for medalist honors after shooting a 73 in the Lemont Sectional at Broken Arrow Golf Club in Lockport.
Nyi prevailed in the playoff over Anthony King of Nazareth Academy and Nick Armbrust of team champion Wheaton St. Francis (303). Nyi led his team to a 10th-place finish (337), while Prairie Central tied for seventh (322).
Nyi will be joined at the state tournament at Illinois State's Weibring Golf Club by Prairie Central senior Josh Kilcullen, who also qualified as an individual with a 78.
Kaneland Sectional: Streator was 12th with a 358 total and did not have any individual state qualifiers. The Bulldogs were led by Jacob Magana and Grant Mascal with 83s. St. Viator won with a 303 total, paced by medalist Nolan Doherty.
Danville Schlarman Sectional: Matthew Barker's 79 led Tri-Valley to second place with a 341 total, earning the Vikings a berth in the state tournament beginning Friday at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington.
Also counting toward the team score were Camdyn Zook (85), Josh Stewart (87) and Drew Guimond (90). Sullivan won with a 339 total and Beecher earned the third state berth at 343. Fieldcrest also had a 343 total, but Beecher advanced by virtue of the fifth player score.
Senior Tyler Jenkins of Woodland was medalist with a 75 on the Danville Country Club course. Joining him as area individual qualiers were El Paso-Gridley freshman Tyler Young (79) and Fieldcrest senior Nick Mariotti (81).
Mercer County Sectional: Tremont took third place with a 349 total to grab a state berth. The Turks were led by Tim Rice and Nolen Leiva with 84s, followed by Torris Lawson (88) and Alec Gilmer (93). Rockridge won with a 346 and Sherrard was second at 347.
Eureka placed ninth (368) led by Gabe Wiegand's 86. There were no area individual qualifiers at Aledo's Hawthorne Ridge Golf Course.
