Brian Matipa scored a hat trick in the first half, while Moses Kabuswe broke a tie with two goals in the last eight minutes as Cornerstone Christian Academy earned a 5-3 victory over Monticello on Friday in the Class 1A Cornerstone Christian Boys Soccer Regional championship at Bloomington.
Cornerstone improved to 19-2-1 and advanced to Wednesday's Judah Christian Sectional semifinal at Champaign against Judah Christian or Tolono Unity.
The Cyclones enjoyed an 18-4 advantage in shots on goal. Kabuswe, Webby Phiri and Quinn Willard had assists as Cornerstone Christian won its second regional in the last three years.
"Their keeper had a great game ... We're very capable on the offensive end," said Cornerstone coach Jeremy Knapp. "We have to keep it together and play good defense."
U High Regional: Daniel Vega scored three goals and added an assist to help Bloomington turn back Peoria High, 7-2, in a Class 2A University High Regional first-round match at Fred Carlton Field.
The sixth-seeded Purple Raiders (7-11-4) also got two goals and two assists from Jose Alvarado, while Andrez Mayo and Merdy Ilonga each had a goal and an assist. BHS keepers Cameron Anderson and Kevin Melchor combined to make five saves as the Raiders enjoyed an 18-7 advantage in shots on goal. BHS advances to face No. 2 U High at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a semifinal match in Normal.
Saints take pair: Mallory Bergbower had 13 kills and Kate Moorman-Wolfe contributed 31 assists as Central Catholic earned two victories in the first day of the Holiday Inn Express West Saints Fall Classic at Shirk Center.
The Saints downed Maroa-Forsyth, 25-19, 25-18, and Carterville, 25-12, 25-16. Central Catholic (17-12) also got 16 digs from Lauren O'Donnel and 11 kills from Abby Cox.
Mount Pulaski wins: Abigail Fitzpatrick supplied 22 digs and eight kills while Skylar Hayes had 13 digs and 11 kills as Mount Pulaski downed Riverton, 25-21, 25-17.
