Jen Kuhn hit a home run and combined with Maddie Ropp on a seven-hitter as University High School beat Normal West, 3-1, in a nonconference softball game at Maxwell Park.

Kuhn had three hits and two RBIs for the Pioneers, who improved to 26-6. Roop (12-4) gave up four hits in 2.2 innings of relief to get the win before Kuhn, who started in the circle for the Pioneers, came back for the final 2.1 innings to get the save.

Mikayla Fairfield had two hits for the Wildcats, while Bailey Turner struck out nine.

Heyworth rallies for title: Claire Post's run-scoring single capped a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh as No. 1-seeded Heyworth downed No. 3 LeRoy, 3-2, to capture the Class 1A Heyworth Regional championship game. Adyson Slayback struck out nine for the Hornets, who advanced to Tuesday's St. Thomas More Sectional semifinals at Champaign.

Olympia advances: Olympia scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the eighth as the No. 1-seeded Spartans slipped past No. 4 Prairie Central, 2-1, in the Class 2A Prairie Central Regional championship game at Fairbury.

Kaelyn Leverson allowed four hits in eight innings and struck out eight for the Spartans, who received three hits from Sydnee Usherwood. The Spartans advance to their own sectional to face St. Joseph-Ogden or Maroa-Forsyth in a Wednesday semifinal game.

Prairie Central tied the game in the seventh on Lindsey Hari's home run.

BASEBALL

West tops Lincoln: Brandon Roth allowed one earned run in 6.1 innings as Normal West downed host Lincoln, 5-2, in a nonconference game. Brennan Diedrich had two RBIs for the Wildcats (25-6). Evan Wallgren got the final two outs for the save.

NCHS triumphs: Nick Stoner drove in two runs as Normal Community (23-6) earned a 4-2 victory over Mattoon in a nonconference game at Mattoon. Mason Burns (5-1) went five innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out five, to get the win while Jake Jacek earned his first save.

U High blanks Pontiac: Karson Bonaparte and Matt Taylor combined on a three-hitter as University High shut down Pontiac, 6-0, in a Champaign Wooden Bat Tournament game.

Bonaparte gave up two hits in five innings, striking out six, while Taylor allowed one hit with five strikeouts in two innings. MacCallan Conklin had two hits and two RBIs for the Pioneers (23-7).

Pekin tops BHS: Pekin broke a 2-all tie with a run in the sixth and took a 4-2 nonconference victory over Bloomington at Howard Saar Field. Nick Sharp had a solo homer and two hits for BHS (11-20).

Holm powers Dwight: Colton Holm went 4-for-4 with six RBIs as sixth-seeded Dwight beat No. 4 Gardner, 8-3, in a Class 1A Dwight Regional semifinal game.

GIRLS SOCCER

NCHS ousted: Sixth-seeded Minooka made a first-half goal stand up in holding off No. 1 Normal Community, 1-0, in the Class 3A Joliet West Regional championship match.

The Iron (19-5-2) scored the apparent tying goal with about 10 minutes left that was negated by an offsides call. NCHS outshot Minooka, 8-6, with Savannah Henson making five saves.

West comes up short: Goals by Zoie Langlois and Jillian Basile off corner kicks gave second-seeded Bradley-Bourbonnais a 2-0 victory over No. 3 Normal West in the Class 3A Normal West Regional championship match. The Wildcats (13-9-2) had seven shots on goal while West goalie Bekah Nielsen made three saves.

Morton edges U High: Second-seeded Morton handed No. 3 University High a 2-1 defeat in the Class 2A U High Regional championship match at Normal.

TENNIS

U High heads state qualifiers: University High had both singles players and both doubles teams earn state berths Friday in the Class 1A University High Sectional boys tennis tournament.

Advancing to the semifinals in singles were U High's Dorath Chamarthi, who will face Seth Jorgensen of Cornerstone Christian, and the Pioneers' Nihar Mothikuru, who will take on Joe Demirjian of Mount Zion. In doubles, the semifinals will pit U High's Tyler Bowers and Thomas Moh against Bloomington's Ian Turnbull-Robby Pratt, as well as the Pioneers' Brevin Knight and Carter Burk against BHS' Evan Turnbull and Gagan Kadadevarmath.

Semis in singles and doubles begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Illinois State's Gregory Street Courts. The top four placers in singles doubles advance to next week's State Tournament.

BOYS TRACK

Barr, Laughery win twice: GCMS freshman Aidan Laughery and Ridgeview senior Mason Barr were double individual winners in the Class 1A Watseka Sectional.

Laughery sped to victories in the 100-meter (11.39 seconds) and 200 (22.84) dashes, while Barr captured the 110 high hurdles (14.63) and 300 intermediate hurdles (38.54).

GCMS, which also won the 800 (1:31.00) and 1,600 (3:28.16) relays, finished third with 63.5 points. Clifton Central took the title with 122 points.

Tri-Valley was fourth with 48 points and got victories from Ryan Steiner in the pole vault (13 feet, 9 inches) and Drew Guimond in the 3,200 (10:02.30). Heyworth's Devon Butler was first in the 400 (50.17).

Fisher's Chittick wins: Lucas Chittick of Fisher took first in the 3,200-meter run in 9 minutes, 48.05 seconds and also qualified for next weekend's state meet in Charleston in the 1,600 (4:37.71) during the Class 1A St. Joseph-Ogden Sectional at St. Joseph.

LACROSSE

Clover signs with Ithaca: Normal West's Carter Clover signed a national letter of intent for a men's lacrosse scholarship with Ithaca College on Friday.

Clover plays for the Bloomington-Normal Warriors and also has played for True Lacrosse out of Chicago the past four years. Ithaca is an NCAA Division III program located in Ithaca, N.Y.
