The University High School boys golf Gold team claimed a seven-stroke victory over Normal Community to win the 16-team Pioneer Invitational on Friday at Weibring Golf Club.
U High's Ethan Huynh finished three strokes shy of medalist honors, ending at a 3-over 74 to finish second to Quincy Notre Dame's Alex McCulla. Bloomington's T.J. Barger ended tied for third at 75. U High Gold's Jacson Yoder tied Normal Community's Drew Kager for third by carding a 76.
U High scored 306 as a team with NCHS coming in at 313. Quincy Notre Dame (317) finished third with Peoria Notre Dame, Lockport and Pleasant Valley ending in a three-way tie for fourth at 323.
Normal West (345) finished 10th, with Bloomington (347) a spot behind. Pontiac tied Champaign Central for 12th at 352. U High Green (355) finished 14th.
Walker nets 100th career goal: Normal West's Jordan Walker scored his 100th career goal as the Wildcats defeated Dunbar (Ky.) in the Go for the Goal Fall Classic at Burlington, Iowa.
Walker's 100th tally, with an assist from Delphy Sabu, gave West (11-4-2) a 1-0 halftime lead. Dunbar scored in the second half to send the match into a penalty kick tiebreaker with the Wildcats prevailing.
Dunbar outshot West, 8-7. West goalkeeper Jacob Davis had seven saves.
U High wins on penalty kicks: A sensational goal by Cayden Redd in the final minute of regulation forged a 5-all tie and University High won in penalty kicks over Quincy Notre Dame in the semifinals of the Burlington (Iowa) Fall Classic. Trailing 5-4, U High's J.D. Kelley threw the ball in from the sideline to around the penalty kick area. Redd bicycle kicked the ball in for the tying goal.
"It was good enough we're probably going to send it in to ESPN (for a possible top play)," U High coach Jeremy Stanton said. "It's the best goal I've seen."
Kelley had two goals, while Redd, Nathan Clay and Wyatt Berg scored one each. Kelley also had two assists. U High (14-4) meets Whitefish Bay, Wis., at 11:45 a.m. Saturday for the title.
NCHS wins: Michael Reibling had a goal and an assist to help Normal Community to a 3-0 win over Bradley-Bourbonnais in the Go for the Goal Fall Classic.
Kyle Byrd and Alex Herrera also added goals for NCHS (10-2-5) Drew Doellman and Ethan Varner contributing assists. NCHS outshot Bradley 12-2 with Matthew Wells credited with two saves and the shutout.
