The University High School soccer team played nationally ranked Peoria Notre Dame to a 2-all tie through halftime, but suffered a 4-2 loss to the Irish on Wednesday in a semifinal of the Dunlap Class 2A Sectional.
J.D. Kelley’s unassisted goal was the Pioneers’ first score. Kelley later assisted on a Camden Brown goal.
“The first half they had some quality chances and so did we. It was pretty even, I thought,” U High coach Jeremy Stanton said. “In the second half, J.D. got a red card with 20 minutes to go and we had to play a man down. It was an unfortunate event I don’t think he should have been kicked out of the game for.”
Ranked No. 8 in the nation and third in Illinois, Notre Dame found the net with the go-ahead goal with nine minutes remaining and added a fourth goal with three minutes to play.
U High’s season, which included a 3-1 regular-season loss to Notre Dame, ended at 19-7. The 20-2 Irish face Morton for the sectional championship Saturday at 5 p.m.
