Bruso’s hat trick
lifts NCHS to
win in soccer

Griffin Bruso's hat trick sparked the host Normal Community High School soccer team to a 4-0 season-opening win over Pekin (0-2) on Tuesday.

Josef Halcomb added one goal and two assists for the Ironmen, who saw Austin Woodside make one save. Bruso also had an assist.

Central Catholic wins: Zachary Tomerlin's second-half goal made Central Catholic a 1-0 winner over Roanoke-Benson at Roanoke. The Saints (2-0) outshot the Rockets, 14-8. Central goalie J.C. Micklich made six saves.

Cornerstone triumphs: Three goals apiece by Moses Kabuswe and Brian Matipa powered Cornerstone Christian to a 7-2 season-opening victory at Rantoul (0-1).

The Cyclones, who outshot Rantoul 18-3, also received a goal from James McBride. Providing assists were Matipa, McBride and Webby Phiri. Goalie Issac Garey made one save.


Saints open with win: Mallory Bergbower had six kills, 13 service points and two aces for Central Catholic in a 25-13, 22-25, 25-10 season-opening victory at Williamsville.

Sarah Brady and Morgan Koch added six kills apiece while Kate Moorman-Wolfe had 22 assists. Erika Moore chipped in 16 digs and three aces while McKahl English had three blocks.

U High wins debut in new league: In its Central State 8 Conference debut, University High (1-1, 1-0) downed visiting Springfield, 25-23, 25-17, behind five kills by Jess McDowell. Alexis Engst added seven assists while Amber Juarez had nine digs.

Streator tops Dwight: Lucy Rieke's nine kills were not enough as Dwight fell to visiting Streator, 25-21, 11-25, 25-10. Haley Weir added 11 service points and two aces for the Trojans (0-1) while Karah Colebank had 12 assists. Dwight's Leah Flynn had three blocks and nine digs.

Streator received seven kills and five digs from Emma Harris along with six aces and two blocks from Skyler Bedeker. Adriann Miller chipped in nine digs while Taylor Hoskins had 11 assists.

Heyworth stumbles: Haley Sieg's four kills couldn't prevent Heyworth from falling to visiting Monticello, 25-19, 25-23. Amber Tomlin added 10 digs and nine assists for the Hornets.

Prairie Central prevails: Host Prairie Central won its season-opener over Coal City, 25-21, 25-20.

Unity bests LeRoy: Unity topped LeRoy, 25-14, 26-2, at Tolono.
