Two players still chasing state championships were among those selected for the 26th annual Pantagraph All-Star Softball Game.
The Area roster for the seniors-only contest will include catcher Alexis Finchum of Class 2A State Tournament-bound Olympia High School and pitcher Amanda Fox of Class 3A sectional qualifier Pontiac.
Fox, an Illinois State recruit, could square off against one of her future teammates when the Area meets the Intercity at 6:15 p.m. June 10 at Champion Fields in Normal. Normal West shortstop Jaxynn Dyson of the Intercity also is headed to ISU.
Head coaches will be Pontiac's Nicole Hayner for the Area and Normal West's April Schermann for the Intercity. Each will have the option of adding up to two players to their rosters.
Teams were chosen by the Pantagraph sports staff from nominations submitted by coaches. Players are asked to contact Pantagraph sports editor Randy Kindred by noon Friday at email@example.com or 309-820-3402 regarding their availability for the game, their school uniform number and their T-shirt size.
All players must appear in the nine-inning game (no re-entry) and a designated player can be used. Pregame ceremonies start at 6 p.m. The contest is co-sponsored by the Bloomington-Normal Girls Softball Association.
Fox, a left-hander with a 14-4 record, heads an Area pitching staff that also includes Sydney Eichelberger of Fisher, Emily Friese of Woodland-Flanagan-Cornell and Alivia Tjaden of Fieldcrest.
Finchum is among three Area catchers, joining Hannah Nguyen of Tremont and Jacie Sullivan of Fieldcrest.
Selected as Area infielders were Morgan Boward of Tri-Valley, Clinton's Raymi Dial, Morgan Greene of Eureka, Grace Schmitz of Streator and LeRoy's Molly White.
Outfield selections included Prairie Central power hitter Addison Casner, Heyworth's Paige Schiffman, Fieldcrest's Alaina Tjaden and Streator's Anna Yanek.
The Area has two versatile utility players in El Paso-Gridley's Ashlyn Stone and Woodland-Flanagan-Cornell's August Gillman.
Normal West's Big 12 Conference champions will be represented by Dyson, catcher/infielder Jess Jacobs and outfielder Mikayla Fairfield. Dyson and Jacobs have been starters since their freshman year, when they helped West to second place in the Class 4A State Tournament.
Central Catholic had five players chosen from a team that won 20-plus games, including the Intercity's two pitchers in Bailey Coffman and Harley Schade.
Saints' power-hitting catcher Kayla Stenger also is on the squad, along with speedy infielder Charlie Sartoris and outfielder Scout Paul.
University High's 28-7 team will be represented by its lone senior, outfielder Lana Williams. Normal Community players chosen were infielders Josi Grove and Rai Savage and outfielder Jessi Grove.
Bloomington landed infielders Maddie Christiansen and Brooke Grady on the squad.
There is reason to expect a close, competitive game. The series stands at 12-12-1 after last year's 8-7 Area victory.
