EVANSTON — Pontiac High School senior Brett Spires had the third fastest time in the 100-yard backstroke Friday to lead Pantagraph area entrants in the 88th Boys State Swim Meet preliminaries at Evanston High School.
Spires was clocked in a personal-best 50.20 seconds to qualify third behind Spencer Walker of Lyons Township (47.22) and Caleb Carlson of Byron (49.01).
A Michigan State recruit, Spires was 13th in the event a year ago and came in with the 10th fastest time from last week's sectionals at 51.26. His time Friday ranks third in Pantagraph area history.
University High's Colton Stogner qualified for Saturday's finals in the 50 freestyle with the sixth-fastest time of 21.10 seconds.
The Alabama recruit also qualified eighth in the 100 freestyle (46.28) and joined Andy Ritsema, Harrison Fudge and Anthony Williamson to qualify eighth in the 200 medley relay in 1:34.14. It was the second-fastest time in Pantagraph area history behind the 1:33.95 they clocked at the sectional.

Stogner, Ritsema, Josh Nepomuceno and Williamson finished 17th in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:11.86.
Justin Alderson of the Metamora co-op sped to a Pantagraph area record 57.15 in the 100 breaststroke to qualify eighth. The time was more than a second faster than his sectional qualifying effort.
U High's Williamson finished 18th in the 200 freestyle (1:43.75), while Ritsema was 23rd in the 100 backstroke (52.70). Fudge, a Wisconsin recruit, took 22nd in the 100 breaststroke (58.43), with Nepomuceno placing 31st in the same event (59.43).
Normal Community's Thomas Reedy was 21st in the 100 breaststroke (58.37) and Bloomington's Robby Pratt finished 35th (59.97). Reedy climbed to fourth in area history while breaking Lance Bergmann's 2013 school record of 58.50. NCHS' Ethan Lowder was 26th in the 50 freestyle (21.84).
The Ironmen's Trevor Tucci, a senior, will compete in the Athletes with Disabilities division Saturday in the 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
