EVANSTON — Junior Noelle Peplowski of the Metamora co-op was the top qualifier in the 500-yard freestyle on Friday during the Girls State Swim Meet preliminaries at Evanston High School.
Peplowski had a season-best time of 4 minutes, 52.54 seconds to edge Loyola Academy's Ella Tierney (4:52.72) for the top qualifying spot. Normal Community junior Claire Koh advanced to Saturday's finals in seventh (5:00.36), as did junior teammate Julia Oostman in 10th (5:00.84).
Peplowski also qualified in the 200 individual medley with a fifth-place time of 2:02.68 that broke her own Pantagraph area record. University High sophomore Lillian Culp advanced as well in 12th (2:05.93). Culp later narrowly missed qualifying in the 100 breaststroke, placing 13th in 1:04.51.
NCHS freshman Julia Heimstead qualified for the finals in the 100 butterfly with an 11th-place clocking of 56.60 seconds. Her time bettered the area record of 56.68 she set in the sectional. Heimstead also had a top-20 finish in the 200 IM, placing 17th in 2:07.73.
Bloomington sophomore Macy Rink will swim in the 200 freestyle finals after qualifying in 11th in 1:52.96. Rink also had a top-20 effort in the 100 freestyle, taking 18th in 52.89 seconds.
Among the area swimmers placing just outside of the top 20 was Bloomington senior Jordan Peterson, who was 23rd in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.46.
U High's 400 freestyle relay of Poleena Kovalaske, Gena Mendez, Culp and Sammy Lighty also took 23rd in 3:36.35.
U High junior diver Dana Siverly ended in 25th place with a 164.40 total.
