A brief preview of this weekend's state swimming meet:

Times: Diving prelims, 9 a.m. Friday; Swimming prelims, 3:30 p.m. Friday; Swimming and diving finals, 1 p.m. Saturday

Area outlook by event

(seedings based on sectional marks statewide):

200-yard medley relay: Normal Community (Lauren Oostman, Katelyn Sauder, Kirsty Hessing, Gabi Shannahan) (24th, 1:48.65). In the sectional, the Ironmen broke their year-old school record of 1:49.44 with the No. 2 time in Pantagraph area history.

200 freestyle: Kira Webster, U High (6th, 1:51.59). Only three girls in area history have gone faster.

Hessing, NCHS (25th, 1:54.04). This senior’s career best in the sectional ranks 11th in area history.

Emily Martin, Illini Central (31st, 1:54.66). The first state qualifier in school history, Martin is seeded eighth among sophomores.

200 individual medley: Elizabeth Madison, U High (22nd, 2:08.78). A two-time state qualifier, this junior ranks sixth in area history. Only five juniors are seeded higher.

Jordan Peterson, Bloomington (32nd, 2:10.79). Only four freshmen are seeded higher. In area history, only seven have swum faster.

50 freestyle: Samantha Battle, Pontiac (55th, 24.86). This senior is Pontiac’s first qualifier since Brianna Vigna in 2007.

Diving: Rachel Williams, NCHS (15th, 418.75). This senior placed ninth last year with 373.70 points after coming in seeded 12th. Only five non-seniors finished higher than her. She also took 30th in 2011. Her 11-dive school record is 431.40.

Ling Kuhn, U High (39th, 368.85). Among juniors statewide, her sectional score ranked 15th. A sectional runner-up, Kuhn would have won at five other sectionals.

100 butterfly: Hessing, NCHS (35th, 58.42). This three-time qualifier’s sectional time ranks fifth in area history. She was 36th a year ago in 59.07.

Alex Binkley, BHS (46th, 58.82). Only five freshmen are seeded higher than Binkley, who ranks ninth in area history.

100 freestyle: Madison, U High (32nd, 53.23). Just 10 girls in area history have surpassed her career best in the sectional. Only seven juniors are seeded higher.

500 freestyle: Webster, U High (2nd, 5:00.14). Only Barrington sophomore Kirsten Jacobsen (4:58.57), the reigning state champion, had a faster sectional time. Jacobsen won last year in 4:50.53.

Kaylee Sulzberger, NCHS (26th, 5:08.77). Seven sophomores had faster sectional times than Sulzberger.

200 freestyle relay: NCHS (Hessing, Katie Kennedy, Sauder, Ga. Shannahan) (36th, 1:39.23). The Ironmen’s sectional time ranks third in area history behind their 1:38.71 from 2011 and U High’s 1:38.87 from last year. Kennedy and Shannahan are freshmen.

100 backstroke: Kennedy, NCHS (56th, 59.60). After entering the sectional with a best of 1:02.07, Kennedy broke the area record of 59.81 set by U High’s Becca Remmes in 2008. Only four freshmen are seeded higher.

100 breaststroke: Sauder, NCHS (14th, 1:05.45). Seeded sixth among juniors, Sauder set the area record in the sectional. Last year, 1:05.45 would have placed 11th.

Peterson, BHS (35th, 1:06.83). Her school record in the sectional ranks third in area history. Only two freshmen are seeded higher.

400 freestyle relay: U High (Webster, Gena Mendez, Sara Hovren, Madison) (28th, 3:36.47). This relay’s sectional time ranks third in both area and school history behind a 3:33.70 (2012) and a 3:35.25 (2011). Their sectional splits were 53.90 (Webster), 54.70 (Mendez), 55.64 (Hovren) and 52.23 (Madison). Mendez is a freshman and Hovren a senior.
