Normal West High School graduate Andrew Loy of Ohio State finished 21st in the 200-meter freestyle Thursday night in the Phillips 66 U.S. National Swim Championships at Irvine, Calif.

Loy had a time of 1 minute, 49.80 seconds. It was the second top-25 finish for Loy, who was 19th Wednesday in the 100 freestyle.

Normal Community graduate and Texas recruit Grace Ariola tied for the 14th fastest time in the women's 50 backstroke preliminaries Friday. Her time of 28.77 seconds qualified her for the 'B' final later Friday night.

Ariola also swam in the 100 butterfly prelims Friday, ranking 73rd with a time of 1:01.56. She was 28th Wednesday in the 100 freestyle.

SOFTBALL

Avanti's Angels prevail: Morgan Day struck out 10 and Mackenzie Leonard had a home run and two RBIs as the BNGSA Avanti's Angels began bracket play with a 6-2 win over the Mid Michigan Chaos in the 18-Under ASA Northern Nationals at Novi, Mich.

Emme Olson had two hits and an RBI for the Angels (45-4), who advanced to play in the winner's bracket quarterfinals Saturday. Day (23-1) walked one, allowed five hits and gave up one earned run.

BASEBALL

17 Gold split two in tourney: Brendan Short pitched a four-hitter and Jacob Newberry had two hits and two RBIs as the BNBA 17 Gold defeated the Windy City Prospects, 7-1, in the DSP 17-18U World Series at Downs. The 17 Gold later suffered a 7-2 loss to Mid-America Baseball.

Newberry had a double among his two hits in the first game. Jack Schirpke added two doubles, while Ben Smith had a home run and two RBIs. Short struck out eight and walked two.

Schirpke led an 11-hit attack against Mid-America Baseball with three hits.
