BUFFALO GROVE — University High School's doubles team of Grace Matheis and Anna Huber won its third-round match Friday before suffering a three-set loss in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A Girls State Tennis Tournament.

Matheis and Huber downed St. Viator's Patricia Dizon and Greta Zimmerman, 6-3, 6-7, 6-0 in the third round. Katie McGraw and Ellie Gallagher of Ottawa then outlasted the U High duo, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the quarterfinals.

Matheis and Huber take a 35-8 record into Saturday's consolation bracket quarterfinal against Alyssa Gulli and Marnie Kopec of Wheaton St. Francis.

U High sophomore Abby Totten posted a consolation third-round win over Ashley Meeky of Southland College Prep, 6-3, 6-2, before being eliminated by Madelyn Jurasek of Maple Park Kaneland, 7-5, 6-0. Totten ended her season with a 32-8 record.

Pioneers' freshman Amaya Fernandes (34-8) also was eliminated, losing in the consolation third round to Aly Cullotta of Woodstock North, 6-1, 6-0.

U High ended the day in a four-way tie for third place with 12 points. North Shore Country Day was in the lead with 19 entering Saturday's final day of competition.

Central Catholic's doubles team of Maggie Stopa and Charlie Sartoris and singles player Clare Wieland also saw their seasons end.

Rock Island Alleman's Lauren Hird and Noely Baumann downed Stopa and Sartoris, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 in the third round before Washington's Sierra Sonnemaker and Erica Shangraw posted a 3-6, 6-0, 11-9 win over the Central duo in the consolation third round. Stopa and Sartoris bowed out with a 25-8 record.

Herrin's Reagan Ridgway eliminated Wieland (32-13) in the consolation third round, 6-3, 6-0. Central was in a five-way tie for 24th place with six points.

All of the area competitors in Class 2A were eliminated on Thursday.
