BUFFALO GROVE — Central Catholic High School sophomore Madison Tattini turned in a dominating performance while winning all three of her matches as the 44th annual state tennis tournament opened on Thursday.
Among the No. 9-16 seeds, Tattini began with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Libertyville's Danielle Blaserd before downing Belleville Althoff's Emma Melichar, 6-0, 6-1, and topping Homewood-Flossmoor's No. 17-32 seeded Haleigh Porter, 6-3, 6-4.
In the fourth round, Tattini (33-1) will face the No. 3-4 seed, Asuka Kawai of Palatine. Central Catholic is tied for 27th place with six points while University High is tied for 44th (5), Lincoln is tied for 87th (2) and Normal Community is tied for 105th (1).
In other action, U High's Christina Su (28-7) went 3-1 while Lincoln's Kena Bere (26-9) was 2-2.
After losing to Fox Lake Grant's No. 17-32 seed Gaby Schoenberg, 6-0, 6-0, Su bounced back to down Kaitlin Deters of Teutopolis, 6-0, 6-0, before dispatching Flora's Allison Carder, 6-1, 6-0. In the consolation third round, Su topped Streamwood's Alaina Kanthaphixay, 6-2, 6-1. In the next round, Su will face Elmhurst Timothy Christian's No. 17-32 seed McKenna Byrne.
Rock Island's No. 17-32 seed Nicole Tyulpa defeated Bere, 6-0, 6-1, but the Railsplitter came back to defeat Jessica Minkov of Franklin Park-Northlake Leyden, 6-3, 6-3, as well as Herrin's Reagan Ridgeway, 6-2, 6-1. Bere was eliminated by Homewood-Flossmoor's Sophia Osabuohien in third-round consolation play, 6-4, 6-1.
The area's three doubles entries were eliminated.
U High's Grace Matheis and Anna Huber (19-12) opened with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Collette Bouwer and Jensen McGuire of Lansing Illiana Christian before falling to No. 17-32 seeds Nikol Blinov and Sophie Hensley of Glenbrook South, 6-1, 6-1, as well as Quincy Notre Dame's Samantha Tracy and Lucy Stella, 7-6 (8), 6-0.
NCHS sectional champions, Katie Toohill and Olivia Kraft (23-9), lost to Evanston's No. 17-32 seeds Jessica Ampel and Abbey Moore, 6-1, 6-4, before topping Grayslake Central's Nikki Tatsuguchi and Lia Boucek, 6-1, 6-1. Toohill and Kraft then fell to Rockford Auburn's Meghan Mediratta and Emma Lai, 6-1, 7-5.
Central Catholic's Clare Wieland and Maggie Stoppa (19-9) lost to Aurora Christian's No. 17-32 seeds Shelby Johnson and Madelynn Jurasek, 6-2, 6-3, as well as Wheaton Academy's Maisie Howland and Lily Bracy, 5-7, 7-5 (10-3).
