BUFFALO GROVE — Pantagraph area tennis players combined to win 12 of 23 matches in the 46th annual girls state tournament on Thursday.
University High School's doubles team of Grace Matheis and Anna Huber (34-7) along with Central Catholic's duo of Maggie Stopa and Charlie Sartoris (25-7) — both seeded between 9th and 16th in Class 1A — won their first two matches.
U High is part of a three-way tie for third with nine points. North Shore Country Day leads with 11 followed by Chicago Payton with 10. Central Catholic has six points and is in a six-way tie for 11th.
Matheis and Huber opened with a 6-0, 6-5 win over Jerseyville's Hannah Hudson and Chelsea Maag before downing Geneseo's Madi Miller and Jane Thomas, 6-1, 7-5. In the third round, the Pioneers will face St. Viator's Patricia Dizon and Greta Zimmerman, the No. 5-8 seeds.
Stopa and Sartoris topped Oak Forest's Julia Cagnina and Caitlyn Casey, 6-0, 6-1, before stopping Roxana's Sara Kreutztrager and Haley Milazzo, 6-3, 6-4. In the next round, the Saints will take on Rock Island Alleman's No. 3-4 seeds, Lauren Hird and Noely Baumann.
In singles, U High's Abby Totten (31-7) went 2-1. She downed Macomb's Ericka Dawson, 6-1, 6-1, before losing to Fenwick's Haley Fakouri, 6-1, 6-1. Totten bounced back with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Troy Triad's Meghan Dulaney. Totten will next face Ashely Meeky of Southland College Prep Charter.
U High's Amaya Fernandes (34-7) also went 2-1, losing to Urbana Uni-High's Lindsay Huang, 6-0, 6-0, before downing Mount Zion's Gabrielle Santos, 6-1, 6-0, and Highland's Taylor Fleming, 6-1, 6-0. Fernandes will next meet Woodstock North's Aly Cullotta.
Central Catholic's Clare Wieland (32-12) went 2-1 with wins over Illiana Christian's Elisabeth Knot, 6-0, 6-0, and Wheaton St. Francis' Jane Price, 6-0, 6-3, and a first-round loss to No. 9-16 seed Fabiola Rivas of Chicago Lake View, 6-1, 6-1. Wieland plays Herrin's Reagan Ridgway next.
In Class 2A, the Normal Community doubles team of Olivia Kraft and Kavya Sudhir (32-4) opened with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Brooke Zielke and Rachel Habbal of Shepard. Kraft and Sudhir then lost to the No. 2-seeded Elizabeth Stefancic and Mraia Goheen of West Aurora, 6-0, 6-0, and Barrington's Niyanthi Puliyala and Kathleen Tomasian, 3-6, 7-5, 11-9.
The NCHS duo of Madison Vail and Grace Walls (36-6) lost to the No. 3-4 seeds Katherine Harvey and Elizabeth Ferdman of Stevenson, 7-5, 6-2, before defeating Minooka's Gabby Hajduk and Grace Thelo, 6-3, 7-6 (10). Vail and Walls were eliminated after a 3-6, 7-5, 11-9 loss to Geneva's Grace Hahn and Jaden Ciesielski.
In singles, Annika Hiredesai of NCHS (19-12) lost to Plainfield North's Gabrilelle Ochalik, 6-1, 6-2, and Homewood-Flossmoor's Lauren Legardy, 6-0, 6-1.
The Iron have three points, putting them in a tie for 30th. Highland Park leads with 14.
Normal West's Ariel Miller (15-15) lost to Lisle Benet's Allyce Gaborik, 6-0, 6-0, and Glenbrook South's Vanessa Vaisanen, 6-0, 6-1.
