University High School freshman tennis star McKenna Schaefbauer will play for the Class 1A state championship on Saturday.
Schaefbauer (26-0) defeated No. 2 seed Vivian Miller of North Shore Country Day in a hard-fought semifinal match Friday, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3, at Buffalo Grove.
A No. 3-4 seed, Schaefbauer will take on another 3-4 seed, Claudia Miller of North Shore Country Day, in Saturday's title match at Buffalo Grove. Claudia Miller advanced by knocking off top-seeded Megan Heuser of Lake Villa Lakes, 7-6, 6-0, in the semifinals.
Schaefbauer earned her spot in the semifinals by downing No. 9-16 seed Amanda Lopykinski of Lemont, 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. She has led U High to 16 points, putting the Pioneers in third place behind North Shore Country Day (27) and Chicago Latin (22).
Schaefbauer's teammate, junior Abby Totten (28-5), posted a consolation third-round victory over Ashley Meeky of Southland College Prep, 7-6, 6-1. Totten will play Saturday morning in the consolation fourth round at Hoffman Estates.
Central Catholic's doubles team of Charlie Sartoris and Carley Hundman, a No. 9-16 seed, suffered a 6-0, 6-2 quarterfinal loss to top-seeded Abygale Ahn and Cassandra Lee of Timothy Christian.
The Central duo (34-5) will play in the consolation quarterfinals Saturday morning at Rolling Meadows. They led the Saints to six points through the first two days, good for 19th place.
Bloomington's Kelsie Ayers (13-17) ended 2-2 in 1A singles after being ousted by Jacelyn Street of Newton, 6-1, 6-1, a consolation third-round match.
In Class 2A, Normal Community's doubles team of Kayva Sudhir and Grace Walls also was eliminated in a consolation third-round match. The NCHS pair was defeated by Kaitlyn Fiedler and Taylor Fiedler of Belleville West, 6-1, 6-4. Sudhir and Walls finished 2-2 in the tourney and 22-7 for the season.
