BUFFALO GROVE — University High School entries combined to go 5-3 in the 47th annual girls state tennis tournament on Thursday to give the Pioneers nine points, good for a tie for sixth place in Class 1A, with Troy Triad.
Central Catholic is tied for 15th with six points. Winnetka North Shore Country Day and Chicago Latin share the lead with 16 followed by Chicago University High with 14. Kaneland is fourth (11) and Effingham St. Anthony fifth (10).
U High freshman McKenna Schaefbauer, a No. 3-4 seed, won three matches to improve to 24-0 on the season. She began with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Wilmette Regina Dominican's Laura Strenk.
Schaefbauer followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin's Valeria Pozo and a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over New Lenox Providence's Emma Davis to advance to Friday's quarterfinals against Lemont's Amanda Lopykinski next.
U High junior Abby Totten (27-5) went 2-1 beginning with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Champaign Centennial's Gurveena Singh. Totten then lost to No. 9-16 seed Karishma Bhalla of Grayslake Central, 7-5, 6-0, before topping Peoria Notre Dame's Maria Coulter, 6-2, 6-2. Totten will next face Richton Park Southland College Prep Charter's Ashley Meeky.
In 1A doubles, Central Catholic's No. 9-16 seeded Charlie Sartoris and Carley Hundman (34-4) went 3-0 beginning with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Lake Villa Lakes' Kylie Jozwik and Melissa Variny.
The Saint duo then topped Chicago U High's Jackie Brown and Ananya Ashthana, 6-2, 6-3, before upsetting No. 5-8 seeds Alex Arenson and Caroline Lommer of Winnetka North Shore Country Day, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-0, to reach Friday's quarterfinals where they will face Elmhurst Timothy Christian's Abygale Ahn and Cassandra Lee.

In 1A singles, Bloomington's Kelsie Ayers (13-16) lost to No. 9-16 seed Piper Schrepferman of Kaneland, 6-0, 6-1, before topping Quincy Notre Dame's Abigail Ley, 6-3, 6-1, and Macomb's Ericka Dawson, 6-1, 7-5. Ayers' next foe is Newton's Jacelyn Street. BHS is tied for 42nd with two points.
The U High doubles team of Brooke Martin and Maggie Kraft (8-13) opened with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 loss to No. 5-8 seed Maddy Jacobs and Sydney Schott of Sterling Newman before falling to Rock Island Alleman's Brooke McKeown and Lucy Rector, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8.
Central's Izzy Goodlick and Kristin Vose (10-10) went 0-2 beginning with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to No. 9-16 seeds Ellie Gallagher and Regan O'Fallon of Ottawa. The Saints then fell to Centennial's Cayla Risinger and Justice Hardin, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8.
Class 2A: Normal Community won three of six matches and has four points in Class 2A, good for a tie for 21st place. Hinsdale Central leads with 22.
The Iron doubles team of Kayva Sudhir and Grace Walls went 2-1 to improve to 22-6. They opened with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Homewood-Flossmoor's Caryolyn Page and Maya Nash before losing to No. 5-8 seeds Sarah Badawi and Katie Dollens of Hinsdale Central, 6-1, 6-1. Sudhir and Walls then topped Barrington's Caroline Tomasian and Julia Pisani, 6-4, 6-0, and will face Belleville West's Kaitlyn Fiedler and Taylor Fiedler next.
The NCHS doubles team of Annika Hiredesai and Hannah Shim (22-12) began with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to No. 9-16 seeds Macy Zaban and Ashtin Hara of New Trier before downing Plainfield North's Mikayla Dwyer and Stephanie Kucera, 6-1, 6-0. The Iron duo then lost to Evanston's Annie Hedges and Margo Connor, 6-1, 6-2.
Normal West freshman Madeline Gentry (17-13) notched a 6-0, 6-0 first-round victory over Rockford Guilford's Kasey Aucutt before losing to both No. 5-8 seed Olivia Oosterbaan of Hinsdale Central, 6-0, 6-0, and Danville's Lauren Ellis, 3-6, 6-4 (10-7).
