MOLINE — First-place finishes by Normal Community West High School’s Eric Gordon and Bryce Basting highlighted area participants’ efforts at the Moline Class 3A Sectional on Thursday as the Wildcats had four individuals qualify for the state track meet next weekend in Charleston.

Gordon cleared the bar at 14 feet, 3 inches to win the pole vault while Basting won the 800-meter run in a time of 1 minute, 54.10 seconds.

Other qualifiers for the Wildcats, who finished seventh in the team standings with 41 points, were Drew Kerschieter with a third-place finish in the 3,200 (9:27.10) and freshman Kyrin Tucker, who set a school record in the shot put with a throw of 52-9 to finish second.

Tucker’s heave also broke the all-time area record for a freshman previously held by Central Catholic’s Josh Brent.

Alec Gerdes was the lone individual qualifier for Normal Community, which scored 12 points to tie for 11th place. Gerdes finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 156-3. The NCHS 1,600 relay also qualified for state with a fifth-place time of 3:21.75.
