Fieldcrest High School’s volleyball team broke away from a 23-all tie to win the first set Saturday night and went on to a 25-23, 25-18 victory over Fulton in the Bureau Valley Class 2A Super-Sectional at Manlius.
Kaitlyn Petersen had 10 kills to lead Fieldcrest (33-4-1), which advanced to Friday’s 1:30 p.m. State Tournament semifinal against Albion Edwards County (35-0) at Redbird Arena.
The key point came at 23-all on a dig by Courtney Moritz, who followed with a set attack for a 24-23 lead.
“It was definitely a momentum changer, not just the first set but for the second set,” Fieldcrest coach Cathy Sanders said. “That’s that moment of competition that you look for. We were going for that moment and we got it.”
Haley Ruestman added seven kills for the Knights, while Tessa Holland had five kills, three blocks and five digs. Gracie Wiesenhofer had 16 assists and Moritz added 10.
Betsy Leonard had six kills to pace Fulton, which finished 15-18-3. Petersen said Fulton’s record did not impact the Knights.
“We knew they were going to be a tough team,” she said. “We all wanted to get it over with in two.”
The state berth comes three years after Fieldcrest had an 11-22 season.
