NORMAL — The Pleasant Plains High School volleyball team utilized a balanced attack Saturday to knock off Galena, 25-18, 25-20, and claim the championship of the Class 2A State Tournament at Redbird Arena.
McKenzie Smith led Pleasant Plains with seven kills, with Allie Edwards adding six, while sisters Macy and Anna Kanilakan contributed five each. Smith also had nine digs for the Cardinals (34-6) with Emily Long dishing out 14 assists.
Morgan Wills had a match-high nine kills for Galena. The Pirates (36-6) received 15 digs from Samantha Stoffregen and 18 assists from Drew Wasson.
St. Thomas More claims third: After winning the Class 2A title a year ago, Champaign St. Thomas More took third place with a 19-25, 25-15, 25-16 win over Nashville.
Allie Trame had 17 kills for the Sabers and Caroline Kerr 31 assists as St. Thomas More ended at 37-5. Bailey Melton had nine kills and Abby Grabowski 16 digs for Nashville (32-10).
Sterling takes 3A crown: Sterling won the Class 3A title behind the 12 kills, 13 assists and 11 digs of Brooklyn Borum in a 25-21, 25-22 win over Belleville Althoff in the championship match.
Josi Borum, a Chicago State recruit, had 15 assists for Sterling (41-1) with Lexi Rodriguez contributing 15 digs.

Althoff (37-5), falling short in its quest for a second straight 3A crown, received 15 kills from Karinna Ball and 25 assists from Mary Wessil.
Joliet Catholic third: Joliet Catholic won the 3A third-place match with a 25-13, 25-18 victory over Chicago Latin. Emily Holbrook had nine kills and Ryan Himshaw 24 assists for the Angels (28-14).
Chicago Latin was led by the 18 assists of Ava Tortorello and 13 digs of Charlotte Cronister.
Benet captures third: Eight kills from Kyla Kenney led Benet Academy past Prairie Ridge, 25-20, 25-23, in the Class 4A third-place match.
Ally Van Eekeren had 17 assists for Benet (36-6). Prairie Ridge was led by eight kills from Trinity Sheridan.
The 4A title match was still in progress at Pantagraph press time.
