NORMAL — Allie Edwards had 11 kills Friday as Pleasant Plains High School's volleyball team edged defending champion Champaign St. Thomas More, 25-22, 15-25, 26-24 in a Class 2A State Tournament semifinal at Redbird Arena.

Maddie Reiser added seven kills and McKenzie Smith six for Pleasant Plains (32-6), which defeated Eureka in the super-sectional. Chloe Burt and Emily Long had 14 assists each and MacKenzie Houser a team-high 16 digs.

Plains advanced to face Galena in Saturday's 1:55 p.m. title match.

St. Thomas More (36-4) was paced by Kayla Brandon with 12 kills and Allie Trame with 11. Caroline Kerr had 30 assists.

Galena cruises: Galena (36-5) coasted to a 25-14, 25-2 win over Nashville. Sami Wasmund had 10 kills and Morgan Wills nine for Galena. Drew Wasson handed out 24 assists.

Nashville (32-9) received nine digs from Sydney Schniker and will face St. Thomas More for third place at 12:25 p.m. Saturday.

Class 3A

Althoff posts win: Karinna Ball's eight kills and eight digs helped defending Class 3A champion Belleville Althoff to a 25-23, 25-15 semifinal win over Chicago Latin.

Katie Wemhoener, daughter of former Illinois State basketball player Todd Wemhoener, added six kills and seven digs for Althoff (37-4). Mary Wessil chipped in 15 assists as Althoff advanced to Saturday's 5:30 p.m. title match against Sterling.

Latin (35-3) received seven kills each from Julia Kindr and Charlotte Cronister.

Sterling prevails: Brooklyn Borum had 15 kills to power Sterling to a 27-25, 25-20 win over Joliet Catholic. Breelyn Borum added nine kills and 13 assists for Sterling (39-1). Lexi Rodriguez had 20 digs for  the winners.

Joliet Catholic (27-13), which ousted University High in the sectional finals, was led by nine kills from Jillian Gray and eight from Bella Ray. Joliet Catholic and Latin play for third place at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Class 4A

Marist tops Benet: Maddie Arundel collected nine kills in Chicago Marist's 25-18, 25-15 Class 4A semifinal win over Benet Academy.

Katie Mather handed out 20 assists and Mairead Boyle had 10 digs for Marist (38-3), which meets Downers Grove North for the title at 8:55 p.m. Saturday.

Benet Academy (35-6), a super-sectional winner over Bloomington, was topped by Kyla Kenney's eight kills, Alley Van Eeekeren's 19 assists and Hattie Monson's 14 digs.

Mahike leads Downers Grove North: Downers Grove North was fueled by 11 kills from Margaret Mahike in a 25-16, 25-21 win over Prairie Ridge.

Elizabeth Dunlap had 20 assists and Jade Casper 10 digs for the winners (30-11). Prairie Ridge (29-11) was topped by Jayden Otto with 12 assists and Hannah Baudin's five kills and 10 digs.
