The Holy Trinity seventh-grade boys basketball team cruised to a 24-7 lead after one quarter and went on to beat Mazon-Verona-Kinsman 65-34 in a first-round game of the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 7A state tournament Saturday at Clinton Junior High.
Hayden Hoerdemann poured in a game-high 34 points for unbeaten Holy Trinity (24-0), which advances to play Fieldcrest West (19-2) at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the quarterfinals.
Brad Connor scored 13 points and Duncan Brady added eight for the Saints.
Fieldcrest West received 28 points from Zach Kirkton to earn a 43-32 win over Winchester.
Kaleb Gardner added nine points for the winners.
In another game involving an area team, Cory Titus and Mitch Holmes each scored 11 points, Cory Malone had 10 and Connor Cruise added eight to send Mount Pulaski to a 51-35 win over Elmwood.
The Bruins (16-7) will play La Harpe (17-5) at 6:45 p.m. Monday.
The only area team, Lincoln, lost a 44-41 decision to Sumner Red Hill at Normal Kingsley Grade School.
Biran Carmichell and Nathaniel Smith each scored 13 points for Lincoln, which finished at 18-5.
