ROCK ISLAND - Missed opportunities led to a pair of tough defeats for the Illinois Wesleyan softball team Tuesday.
Augustana rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to win the opener, 3-2, at Carver Field. In the nightcap, Alissa Shaner scattered 10 IWU hits as Augustana claimed a 2-0 victory.
Augustana improved to 19-6 overall and 4-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. IWU dropped to 17-8 and 6-2.
"Both losses were tough," said IWU coach Lloyd Hulit.
IWU grabbed a 2-0 run lead in the top of the ninth in the first game on a two-run double by Kendahl McIntyre. The Vikings plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning before winning on a sacrifice fly by Lorena Carnetisch.
Jenna Szybowicz (8-0) earned the win, allowing eight hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts and two walks. Losing pitcher Lauren Hyland (9-5) also gave up eight hits while striking out nine and walking six.
Katie Frawley had three hits to lead IWU's attack, and Molly Coers added two hits.
Shaner (8-4) outdueled Frawley (3-1) in the second game. Frawley allowed four hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts and no walks.
Coers, Monica Urban and Ashley Deck all had two hits for the Titans.
