ROCK ISLAND - Missed opportunities led to a pair of tough defeats for the Illinois Wesleyan softball team Tuesday.

Augustana rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to win the opener, 3-2, at Carver Field. In the nightcap, Alissa Shaner scattered 10 IWU hits as Augustana claimed a 2-0 victory.

Augustana improved to 19-6 overall and 4-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. IWU dropped to 17-8 and 6-2.

"Both losses were tough," said IWU coach Lloyd Hulit.

IWU grabbed a 2-0 run lead in the top of the ninth in the first game on a two-run double by Kendahl McIntyre. The Vikings plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning before winning on a sacrifice fly by Lorena Carnetisch.

Jenna Szybowicz (8-0) earned the win, allowing eight hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts and two walks. Losing pitcher Lauren Hyland (9-5) also gave up eight hits while striking out nine and walking six.

Katie Frawley had three hits to lead IWU's attack, and Molly Coers added two hits.

Shaner (8-4) outdueled Frawley (3-1) in the second game. Frawley allowed four hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts and no walks.

Coers, Monica Urban and Ashley Deck all had two hits for the Titans.

"We hit the ball well all night," Hulit said. "We just could not get the big hit when we needed it."
