CARBONDALE Normal Community High School’s girls soccer team posted a pair of victories Friday in the Fralish Cup tournament.
NCHS overcame 1-0 deficits to defeat Poplar Bluff, Mo., 5-1, and Highland, 4-1. The Ironmen improved to 5-2-3 and advanced to today’s semifinals.
Poplar Bluff’s Alex West scored in the game’s opening minute, but Krystal Gundy tied it in the fourth minute with a goal off a Danielle Roemersberger assist. Francie Brown scored in the 13th minute off an assist from Sarah Tretter, and Jessica Rolfs made it 3-1 when she scored off an assist from Brown. Gundy and Emily Claricoates scored in the second half, with Brown and Michelle Bender picking up assists.
NCHS outshot Poplar Bluff, 15-1.
Highland broke on top in the 28th minute on a free kick by Margaret Wiese and led 1-0 at the half. NCHS received second-half goals from Tretter, Brown, Claricoates and Roemersberger, with Bender, Allison Schultz and Kerrie Liesman contributing assists.
NCHS had a 14-2 edge in shots on goal.
“The first game we just weren’t quite ready to go yet,” NCHS coach Matt Chapman said. “Then we woke up and controlled the game from there on. The second game was more of a battle. We let them stay in it a little longer than we wanted to, but we made some adjustments at halftime and took care of business. It was a long, hot day and we did a pretty good job.”
