2000: Aurora West is the top seed for the 70th Pontiac Holiday Tournament this week. The defending Class AA state champion enters the tournament on a 30-game winning streak. Joliet, led by Illinois recruit Roger Powell Jr., is the second seed and the last team to beat Aurora West.
1990: The resurrected Illinois State Basketball Classic at the 10,200-seat Redbird Arena boasts a talented and seemingly balanced eight-team field. El Paso, University High, Clifton Central and Sherrard were seeded but in no particular order.
1980: David Nussbaumer, who quit the Illinois State basketball team after the Milwaukee Classic last week, has returned to his home in Virginia. Nussbaumer is thinking of law school or getting a job. He met requirements for his degree last summer.
1955: Around the world, wide-eyed sports celebrities are scurrying to see what Santa left in the sweat socks they trustingly hung on their mantles, but in Pontiac it means the livewire Junior Chamber of Commerce will host some 200 dinner guests who will compete in the 25th annual Pontiac Holiday Tournament.
