2001: Matt Havens calmly drilled a deep bomb with eight seconds remaining in double overtime to hand Bloomington an exhausting 72-69 Big 12 Conference victory over Champaign Central. Havens' 23 points handed the Purple Raiders their first home win and first conference triumph of the season.

1991: Gene Masters, who coached Normal Community High School track and field for 38 years, died at Brokaw Hospital at age 74. The Ironmen won 13 Corn Belt Conference titles, 12 Intercity crowns and one Capitol Conference title under Masters. He retired as track and cross country coach in 1983.

1981: Illinois State scored five points in the final nine seconds to take a thrilling 66-63 victory over Northern Iowa at the Uni-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Anthony Jones' three-point play with two seconds remaining enabled the Redbirds to boost their record to 11-9.

1956: The Wardrobe Cleaners clinched first place in the YMCA Men's Basketball League for 1956 by sinking the Redbirds, 100-82. Fran Conlee, Spud Crank and Don Drane were the key men in the champions' triumph.
