5 years ago (2002): Kevin Emberton, a 1997 graduate of Normal West High School, was hired to coach cornerbacks at LaFayette College, a Division I-AA school at Easton, Pa.
15 years ago (1992): Kevin Schwulst stopped six-time champion Frank Niepagen, 6 and 5, in the 36-hole finals of the Bloomington-Normal Match Play Tournament at ISU Golf Course. The 32-year-old Schwulst won his first Match Play championship 14 years ago.
25 years ago (1982): Weeks of rumors, proposals and counterproposals turned into plain fact when representatives from 12 Central Illinois high schools voted to form a new conference, effectively restructuring the current Big 12 and Capitol lineup into two six-team geographical divisions. The league will be called the Big 12.
50 years ago (1957): Consistent Shirley Dommers of Belvidere won the 24th annual Women's State Amateur Golf Tournament championship by defeating young Mary Tully of Chicago, 5 and 4, over 32 holes at Bloomington Country Club.
