NORMAL — Normal manager Billy Horn isn’t necessarily happy to see starting pitcher Scott Sebald go, but he is happy where Sebald is going.
The CornBelters lost their Opening Night starter earlier this week when Sebald was signed by the Miami Marlins.
“I’m excited for him to get another shot with an organization,” Horn said. “He’s a great kid and a hard worker. I hope he makes it up to the big leagues someday.”
Sebald was Normal’s top starter last season, posting a 9-2 record and a 2.89 ERA. In the early going this season, the left-hander was 3-2 with a 3.30 ERA.
“It’s been an honor to be a part of such a great organization,” Sebald said of the Belters. “Getting to play for two amazing managers (Horn and Brooks Carey), they both really taught me a lot about the game and how to succeed.”
Sebald will report to the Jupiter Hammerheads, the Marlins’ high Class A Florida State League affiliate. The Cincinnati native previously pitched in the Texas Rangers system.
Lake Erie dumps Belters: Lake Erie scored eight second-inning runs and eased to a 12-2 triumph over Normal on Tuesday at the Corn Crib.
Belters starter Jacinto Garcia gave up four hits and walked five for seven earned runs in 1⅔ innings.
Normal scored its first run in the seventh as Cody Erickson singled home Chris Iriart. In the ninth, Sammy Vega crossed the plate as Ryan Dickt grounded out.
Lake Erie starter Sean Renzi worked six scoreless innings.
Comings and goings: Horn has signed three players who participated in his tryout camp at the Corn Crib last Saturday.
Added to the roster Tuesday were pitchers George Faue and Chris Weiss and infielder Brandon Kussmaul.
Faue was 2-7 with a 4.18 ERA for Northern Illinois this spring. The left-hander joins infielders Justin Fletcher and Sammy Vega as former Huskies on the Normal roster.
Weiss was the closer at Hofstra, saving nine games to go with a 2-4 record and 3.65 ERA. The right-hander struck out 67 in 44⅓ innings.
Kussmaul batted .344 with three home runs, 38 RBIs and 12 stolen bases this spring at Division III Virginia Wesleyan.
Normal also released pitcher Jose Savinon and utility player Derek Bauer. Savinon had a 7.00 ERA over nine innings, while Bauer was hitting .164 with three RBIs in 67 at-bats.
The Belters placed outfielder Tony Holton on the 7-day injured list, while activating utility man Cody Erickson from the same list.
