BLOOMINGTON — Five top players from last year's Bloomington Edge playoff team will be back with the franchise as it returns to the Indoor Football League next season.
Quarterback Caleb Holbrook, linebackers Dontae McCoy and Brad Blumenshine, wide receiver Marcus Lewis and defensive back Mitch Moore re-signed with the team during a news conference Thursday night at Tony Roma's.
"We are really working to promote a family atmosphere — a band of brothers — working towards the same goal," first-year head coach Nick Ruud said in a press release.
"Part of that is having a solid core of players who know the expectations of this organization and have the chemistry to build upon that foundation. This is that group."
Holbrook passed for 2,115 yards and 43 touchdowns in his second year with the team last season, helping the Edge to a 7-5 regular season record in Champions Indoor Football. He also had 13 rushing TDs. Lewis had 58 catches for 697 yards with 17 TDs.
McCoy, an Illinois State University product, led the team with 53 tackles, with Moore ranking third with 45. Blumenshine appeared in two games, making five total tackles with 2½ stops for loss.
"I am excited to have all these guys back on board," said Ruud. "They are not only great players and teammates but they are exactly the type of outstanding people we want in this organization."
Ruud, a former Bloomington Extreme offensive lineman, was named to replace Ameer Ismail in August, becoming the franchise's sixth head coach. Last month, the Edge announced their move to the IFL after two seasons in the CIF.
Bloomington played four seasons (2009-12) as an original member of the IFL, which is now considered the No. 2 indoor league behind the Arena Football League.
