BLOOMINGTON — The Bloomington Edge saw their hope for a X-League Indoor Football postseason berth dashed after the league suspended the Cape Fear Heroes.
Cape Fear, which had been in third place, received forfeit losses for its final two games after the league ruled the Heroes organization was "not in good standing with the X-League's guidelines and operations manual."
Following the ruling, the league decided the X Bowl II championship game would be played Saturday with the Florida Tarpons hosting the Rio Grande Valley Sol.
The Cape Fear forfeits left the Tarpons (6-2) in first place, followed by Rio Grande Valley (5-2) and St. Louis (5-3). The Edge beat the Sol twice and were among three other teams also at 5-3, but the Attack held the tiebreaker.
The original X-League playoff format called for the first place team to earn a bye with the next two teams playing in a semifinal. However, with agreement from St. Louis, the league put the Sol and Tarpons into the X Bowl.
Rio Grande Valley had one regular season game remaining on its schedule, a Monday home game against Corpus Christi (0-7).
