BLOOMINGTON - Bloomington Extreme coach Ted Schmitz expects a mix of Bloomington-Normal and out-of-town candidates for his United Indoor Football League team's tryouts later this month.
Schmitz said Thursday he has had calls from prospective players from "the Quad Cities, Pontiac, Champaign … even one from Chicago," in addition to those from Bloomington-Normal.
Tryouts will be Dec. 17 at Illinois Wesleyan's Shirk Center. Registration runs from 8 to 9 a.m., followed by tryouts from 9 a.m. to noon. Anyone 18 and older is eligible to participate. There will be a non-refundable $50 registration fee to try out.
"We hope by the middle of December to have some more announcements (of players), and by the end of the month we're looking to sign hopefully about half of our people," Schmitz said.
"This will be our main tryout camp. What we do after that, we'll decide later. But right now, there's just one primary camp."
UIF rosters typically range from 22 to 30 players, with 21 dressing for each game. Anyone signed will receive $200 per game, with a $25 incentive for games won.
The Extreme will open its inaugural season in March at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in downtown Bloomington.
"Again, we're looking for people with local flavor," Schmitz said. "But I'm not saying they're all going to be local people (signed)."
