PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — Todd Mitchell of Bloomington appeared well on his way to the match play portion of the 117th U.S. Amateur after firing a 3-under-par 67 in Monday's first round of stroke-play qualifying at Riviera Country Club.
However, Mitchell failed to sign his scorecard and was later disqualified. His score tied for the second best of the day at Riviera and tied for fourth place overall in the 312-man field.
Mitchell, appearing in his eighth U.S. Amateur, would have played his second round Tuesday at Bel-Air Country Club before there will be a cut to the low 64 for match play beginning Wednesday at Riviera. Mitchell, 39, had advanced to match play four previous times, advancing to the round of 16 in 2015 at Olympia Fields Country Club.
